"The West Midlands has been officially recognised as England’s best performing region of fire and rescue authorities for 2005/06.
All of the five fire and rescue authorities that make up the West Midlands Regional Management Board (WMRMB) - Staffordshire, Shropshire, West Midlands, Warwickshire and Hereford & Worcester - achieved Good ratings under the Government’s Comprehensive Performance Assessment process."
So you can all sleep safe in your beds tonight. However .....
The best performing Authority was Merseyside! Shortly after this was announced they were revealed to have a multi-million pound overspend, and they have had a strike to due the intransigence (and downright meglomainia) of their Chief!
I think Staffordshire were ranked fourth in the Country, yet we had a vote of no confidence in our Chief from Cheadle Council, and he narrowly avoided a vote of no confidence from his firefighters and a strike here aswell! Moral amongst the workforce is lower than a snake in a limbo contest.
As an emergency worker we nearly all do our best, but beware of the beauty parades that maquerade as definative league tables, just like the education ones, they don't mean much.
Having said, that I think we have a cracking Ambulance and Police service in the County. We are lucky aswell, because having worked all over the County it seems obvious to me that The County Town gets a healthy slice of these services!
Of course the Fire & Rescue service is beyond reproach, and when we ... oops! they, are collecting in the town centre on 20/21st December please pop a penny in their collecting tins.
