Explain your Avatar!

Flossie is the name of the youngest spaniel. To preserve pack order, her dinner is always set down after that of her mother who also enjoys primacy in matters of position on the sofa etc. My forum name is proof that, despite what she thinks, I haven't forgotten her. The avatar was contributed by a fellow forumite and I completely love it, although for some reason the new forum has chopped the top off my rather smart hat.

Sod anonimity; mine is a self portrait. I am befuddled old fella, but not a priest; just got an understandable desire to be clad in black & white garments due to my Stafford Rangers fixation! I got this beauty, in a scip next to the convent on Lichfield Road, discarded just above a load of used condoms!:lorks:

I went to Rebellion Festival last year in Blackpool, prior to a nap before the nights activities we called in to a Wetherspoons to refuel I sat there waiting for beer battered fish and chips but they had lost the order, during the wait I checked Facebook and whilst I did that my wife took a photo, this is it.

A pet peeve of mine is when people don't have an avatar. Indeed, I have even made it so that a large box is permanently displayed at the top of The Forum, which only disappears once you have uploaded an avatar, showing instructions on how to do so. However, plenty of people still don't have one - which means they must be browsing The Forum with a great big box taking up half their screen, and all that it would take to get rid of it is to click the link inside said box and choose a picture!

I thought I would post this here, just in case some people didn't realise that all they had to do to get rid of that box is to follow the instructions contained therein to equip oneself with an avatar. :D

Don't know if this still applies, but I couldn't put an avatar on until I'd logged into a PC, as I tend to browse forums from my iphone or iPad i tried to put my avatar on via those devices despite trying several times and wasting my time and getting frustrated didn't have any luck. A lot of people don't have pc's anymore so could be a reason why people are not putting on avatars plus some people still don't know what they are.

Like Darben I had the same problem loading an avatar from my iPad. Faced with two possible solutions - read the iPad manual or crank up my PC. - I opted for the PC.

Ah, very interesting; I never thought of that! I shall see if I can test that at some point. Thanks for the info.

Stafford forum stole my facebook avatar when I signed in with facebook. I havent been bothered to try and change it as I dont think anyone would recognise me from the picture anyhow :)

I'm on an iPad atm, so I thought I'd test this.. It's just as easy (if not easier) than on a computer:

Click on your username at the top-right.
Click on "Avatar".
Click "Choose file..." button.
Choose to either take a photo, or choose from an existing pic in your iPad.

and that's it! no excuse ;)

Would it be possible to just inflict some random picture on people? If they get one that they really don't like, then they'll change it - if not, then they are still identifiable by the default one that they get.

I do tend to think of people as their avatar picture and am sometimes confused when they change them - or don't have one at all.

As for people changing names, well, that's just one step away from being Grant Shapps...

Yeah, tbf I only just got my iPad a couple of months ago, so maybe this is a recent development & it used to be more of a faff..

For anyone on one atm who hasn't yet set an avatar - try the above, it's dead easy! :D

True, I've just changed avatar a couple of times on ipad which is up to date, but, out of interest I've just tried it on my old iPhone which I haven't updated for a while and I can't do ought on it avatar wise when I click choose file it doesn't respond. So it's got to be the apple software updates which are the issue and not the forum.
