Explain your Avatar!

A pet peeve of mine is when people don't have an avatar. Indeed, I have even made it so that a large box is permanently displayed at the top of The Forum, which only disappears once you have uploaded an avatar, showing instructions on how to do so. However, plenty of people still don't have one - which means they must be browsing The Forum with a great big box taking up half their screen, and all that it would take to get rid of it is to click the link inside said box and choose a picture!

You might be mistaking the mistake that
A) people are computer literate and actually know what an avatar is.
b) they are bothered about having one.

I am not computer literate, my son uploaded my avatar.

I am recommending lots of people to the forum but they are not joining as they are put off by jargon. Suggestion to admin ....don't assume that everyone clicking on the first time knows what it's all about.

I was drunk.
Incidentally, seeing myself more as an '&I' than a 'Withnail', i would ideally have signed up as 'Marwood' - realising early on that 'I' would be rather inconvenient when being 'quoted', if you see what
I said:
something that 'I' didn't say at all
i mean.

For some reason, that escapes me now, i thought it best not to.

I notice many people on here still don't have an avatar. I appreciate that you can't add one from various places (I think there was an iPad problem or something), but it's doing me head in now! It might not seem worthwhile to a lot of people, but to me it helps me differentiate between people/posts and is not a tricky thing to sort out.

Please sort it out!

I agree with the lego man.

It's not just for Mr. Rex's benefit either. It can help when you are looking for something you yourself have said as well - as i was doing earlier for reasons i can't remember. It is so much easier to scroll down through stuff just looking for your have-at-yar to find it.

Same here, I rely on son to get all my avatars, pictures etc onto the screen for me. (safer that than me deleting all the programs off in one foul swoop as I've done in the past :D ) .....don't expect me to change anything once he flies the nest! ;)

You could use one of your own photos or just pick one from the many websites that offer them - then go to your profile and upload it. You may need to resize photos.

As Mrs.Beeton might say, first catch your hare.

1. Choose a picture - either one you already have saved to your computer, or one you have found online and have saved- but it needs to be one that is in 'Your Pictures' to make life easy for yourself.

2. Top right of the page you should see 4 tabs - peggy inbox alerts log out

not right at the top, but underneath the picture of the park.

Put the cursor over 'peggy' and a drop down menu will appear - you will see
Personal Details

Signature

etc

down to

Avatar

put the cursor on Avatar and click (left click)

3. You will see -

Use a custom avatar
etc

Upload new custom avatar:
Choose File

The 'Choose File' looks a bit like a button, click it and it will take you to 'My Pictures' (assuming you are a Windows kinda gal).

4. Now you need to find the picture, so scroll through the pictures in 'Your Pictures' until you have the one you want and then click it so it is highlighted

5. Click on the 'open' button to the right and the picture will appear in the forum window

6. Click okay and it's done

resizing maybe above my abilities but I'll give it a go
:0)
Choose an image that isn't too big in the first place.

Forum 1.0 had a limit in the environs of 200x200, stay within that and you won't need to resize.

Given that it seems to have taken me far too long to explain what is an easyish process, i dread to think how long it might take me to explain how to resize an image. :o

Current Forum says - It is recommended that you use an image that is at least 200x200 pixels.
Yes, the new Forum can handle much larger pictures and will (I believe) resize things for you. :)

Sorry, I tried to make it as clear as possible without taking up too much space! At the moment, anyone who logs-in and doesn't have an avatar sees the following:

:buddy: Hi {your_username}, why not give yourself an Avatar? An avatar is the little picture that appears next to your name every time you make a post. Personalise your messages by setting an avatar here: Click here to set your Avatar picture. This notice will disappear as soon as you have set one! :D

Many thanks to Withnail for providing even more detailed instructions, and glad you got sorted, peggy. :)

Thank you Glam. I would not have asked, only the chimp was baffled and has been nagging me for ages to find out. You have probably already guessed that we are not Stafford natives.
Cheers
