Thanks for the support guys!
Bob, of course I'm not suggesting we all radically change our lives and put ourselves out of pocket!
And your already supporting our town buy drinking beer locally woo :)!

Just that maybe we change one thing, or try something new it could make a real difference!

For example I live about 60 seconds away from a local butcher and greengrocer - have I ever been in?

I'm ashamed to say I haven't!

So I've challenged myself to go in, have a look around (and I bet I find a bargain!)

So let us know you find!

CRL - that butchers is brilliant - the meat is really fresh and the sausages are gorgeous. veggies are good price too, as are his eggs :)

What a fantastic thread and plenty of ideas for people to support local businesses. Whilst Stafford has had seriously bad news in the past few weeks, I've had to bite my lip just recently and not reply to some of the doom mongers who seem to be wallowing in the bad news.
Stafford is an excellent town,it's people are friendly, the town is attractive with many historic buildings, it has many places to eat and drink.
Yes shopping could be better but there are plenty of good businesses that offer quality products/service.
People lead busy lives and I like many others do most of my general shopping at a supermarket, but I try and pop into town on a saturday to use the market as the produce is superior to the supermarkets. Like others on here we use Kevin the butcher in the corner(good selection of meat, sausage, bacon etc), good selection of cheeses and cooked meats, eggs, oatcakes etc from the deli stall and fresh bread and scones from the bakery stall. there are plenty of other good stalls on the market such as the hardware, cards, haberdashery, socks etc stalls. Yes the market needs refurbishing and more stalls occupyed but new small businesses need a helping hand to get established (eg there is a new stall selling kitchenware toiletries etc just been set up on the market).
We like to fit in a drink and something to eat when go up town and in this area you are spoilt for choice. We either go to the Soup Kitchen, the Bap Shop or the newly opened Roma cafe but it is hard to beat the cosiness of the Rose & Crown when it's cold and the fires are lit.

We bought our veg from lowndes on friday, it was cheaper than the supermarket, the fruit and veg was bigger and of better quality. We also hit the stafford tourist trail yesterday, 8 years I have lived here and had my first visit to the high house. Also took in St Marys and the guildhall.
Trying to use local businesses a bit more.

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
If maybe you buy a carrot from the local green grocer

It closed a few years ago.

If you buy a sausage from the local butcher

That's possible and we do use the butchers.

If you buy nail varnish from the market

Errr, male and not into make up :)

If you can buy a pint of beer from your local pub

Closed a few years ago and is now a meeting place for a church.

If you buy a sandwich from a local cafe

No cafe but there is a bakers which we do use.

It's probably not as easy as it should be to shop locally. There are three Co-op within a mile of home but are these "local" shops? Probably not now.

i think i've worked out where big blue wolf lives!! i did some work for *that bakery* back in the day at nantwich and i love their pastries!! lovely fresh produce too.
i was talking to a load of mums at playgroup the other day about lownes... it is so much cheaper than supermarkets, even when there is a massive deal on at the supermarket its still a lot cheaper at lownes. (i think it might be spelt lowndes? who knows.) and its ussually fresher too. the mums all looked at me like i was mad like they've never heard of a greengrocers.
i don't eat much meat so can't shop in the market but would do if i was cooking for friends.
i was in asda today and actually had time to look about a bit. if you're careful you can get some good deals but theres an awful lot of things that are crazy expensive! i suppose theyre hoping you don't look at the prices. eg - baby wipes are £1.29 at tesco and £1 everywhere else. i know its only 29p but if you times that by how many they must sell and its an crazy amount of profit. and i reckon tesco buy it in a lot cheaper than say, poundland.

Just to say if you are passing Chicken John today he has some rather nice looking black pudding. I bought half of it though, more armadillos on the way! Also had some Pat Gorman pork pies, which are bloody lovely. I've found its always worth a trip in before work nowadays, all the good stuff is gone by lunchtime!

Actually, does anyone know if John will de-bone his chicken if you ask nicely? Takes me ages to get the bones out of the thighs, am sure I'm missing something as most butchers do it in seconds!

i should know how to spell lowndes - i worked opposite that shop for years in 'la patisserie' until i opened my own place. one of them things in the back of your mind but you're not sure of. we used to get our strawberries for cream cakes from there. oh, and brown bananas - perfect for banana sponge (much better than fresh green bananas. they used to keep them for me!) i love the idea of local shops using each other for their produce :)
