Llandudno is also better looked after than most other towns in the area. It is generally well maintained, has very little litter and doesn't attract drunk idiots (I behave when I'm there!).

We always call in at Rhos after driving the full length of the prom at Llandudno and get fish and chips from the chippie round the back by the shops and then park on the prom, smashing.
So sad to hear about Rhyl, had some great times there back in the 80's.

- Little walk takes you to a hill top gondola overlooking the bay

I spent pretty much every other summer weekend in Aberdovey for about 8 years, loved it. My step dad liked to windsurf, we liked to go to the beach!

As you drive down to the beach you will pass Talacre Beach Caravan Park. The road then splits Point of Ayr Caravan Park on the left, the right fork takes you down to the hamlet where there' s a 50p shop, café, bakery, pub, penny arcade, toilets. No promenade just a big beach, take a big parasol.
eachmm, actually, looking Point of Ayr. Talacre Beach on google maps, and it appears to be a caravan park/holiday home - i don't see any promenade/pier/etc.
just to be clear - my main criterion here is to eat fish & chips while walking along the seaside.. not on the beach, just along the promenade/pier/etc. i know that's very specific, but it's a fond childhood memory for ms. db (she's from grimsby originally) so i'd like to ensure she can at least get a cone of chips by the seaside
am i just looking in the wrong place on google maps, or is talacre beach perhaps not the place for this?

I vote for Llandudno, as already mentioned the pier is lovely and you can climb the Great Orme - not sure if I'd do it in this weather though - but you must also visit Conwy - five miles down the road. Conwy castle is my favourite castle and you can also visit the smallest house in Britain which is only 3 metres high by almost 2 metres wide!
No need to climb it - just get the cable car, shout obscenities at the sheep and people below, and then once at the top, just take a few more steps and end up in the pub.

I spent every childhood holiday at Aberdovey. It was also the setting of my first holiday without parents (my friend's mum had called the local newsagent to ask if we could use their phone to keep in touch. The owner told lots of other people to look out for us and our plans to hitchhike to freedom were scuppered) and I still love it to bits. There is an empty beach across the railway line opposite the cemetery.I recommend Aberdovey -

We had a great journey to LLandudno last year, as previously mentioned it's motorway and dual carriageway most of the way.
Certainly thinking of going again so sometime soon. We had a nice walk along to Conwy as well and caught the bus back .
Watch out for the Seagulls in LLandudno though. Like no others I've ever seen anywhere else and will come and get the chips and sandwiches out of your mouth as you sit or walk along eating them! Especially on the pier.We had just splashed out a fortune for icecreams, started walking from the kiosk and next thing I knew, before I'd even had one lick of the icecream, this massive seagull swooped from behind and took it out of my hand and flew off with it. Over the next few days we watched this seagull sitting on the lamppost by the icecream kiosk and swooping in on other people as they were just walking off with their icecreams. He'd got his manouevre practised to perfection.

I agree the Dovey is very nice and not what I would call a touristy sea side resort. Which is one of the nice things about it.
I have to disagree with you on the time it takes to get there though, I must have driven there about 10 times in the space of a few years a few years ago and it was always closer to 3 hrs to get there. Llandudno is possible in under 1and a half hours if you go m6 m56 a55 and have a clear run.

Llandudno. Even out of season it has it's charms. Also has the ubiquitous Weatherspoon; look out for the Palladium at the West end of town. Considerable amount of the character of the original building has been preserved.

Head out the back door and turn right for the best pub in town, but I agree that spoons is good. They sell several Welsh ciders, a massive plus in my book.

Recommend Llandudno been lots of development there large retail park on the edge of town and the town itself is worth a wonder, from the retail park keep walking up the high street will eventually come to turning towards the pier and onto the front, it's very clean and I've never been when its ever been crowded and that's been different times of the year.

No I had to look twice lol Aberdovey is nice and never too busy, have to watch the road on way after Welshpool renound for welsh police and their cameras particularly on a sunday!
