Some people have been known to keep a small stock of regularly used prescription-only drugs, so that they can start a fairly obvious course of treatment long before they can actually get a GP to agree to it and fill in the form for them - you can be a week in front that way, sometimes, apparently...

They aint having my tramadol back! I came off them earlier than prescribed but they are great for getting rid of migraines, assuming you have a day to write off in bed.

I had a tumour removed from the back of my right hand about 4years ago. The Drs at Cannock hospital gave me Tramadol for the pain. I took a couple of days worth and had to stop. I was hallucinating. I could see tiny spider/ant like creatures crawling all over me. I'd rather suffer the pain than go through all that again.

It's like having NHS money in your downstairs cupboard, you can't spend!

So, Would you (i) vote for a party who say they will raise income tax to fund NHS?
NEVER!

I'd vote for a party that will lock all public sector salaries to the same yearly rise, from MPs down, with the same limitations on what can be used for expenses. Never happen though so I'll just keep drawing cocks on the ballot papers.

I hope you either never get seriously ill or have a huge amount of savings

Good luck with that logic

Explain yourself JM, it sounds like you've misunderstood where I'm coming from, good luck with what logic?

Not sure I know what you mean, from my argument, I never once said I could/would do without the NHS, or say I know I'm never going to be seriously ill, or talk about my savings!!

A health service has to be paid for

There are usually two ways

1 Payment via taxes collected - which at present are insufficient to fund the service

2 Payment on demand, as in the US , where even those on the best medical insurance pay around $50 to see a GP

You indicated that you would never be in favour of a rise in income tax to fund the NHS

The only third alternative is to move a great deal of money from some other public funded service like education, military, welfare

So, what might your solution be?

No no no Mr JM, I merely pointed out that I was not willing to pay the extra what'evs, I hinted at what money we (as tax payers, fnarr fnarr) pay into the NHS thru tax is enough to create a very decent standard NHS, one that we can be proud of.

Who said what we pay into the NHS now, is insufficient?
I say what we pay into the NHS is sufficient, it's those doing the spending are insufficient.

OK, so we pay the extra tax, but before you know it, the shit has hit the fan once more, the NHS has been called a shitstate once more and someone says; Well, the only way to make things better is chuck even more money at the problem!

The NHS in England should be given £2bn more next year, the King's Fund health think tank has said.
Calls for extra money for the service are intensifying after the latest figures showed the deficit growing as performance deteriorates.

Halfway through the 2014-15 financial year the service's deficit had reached £630m - up from £500m a few months ago.

It comes as targets are being breached for A&E, hospital operations and cancer treatment.

In a briefing document, the King's Fund said the levels of deficits - revealed in official NHS board papers - were "unprecedented" and showed financial distress had become "endemic".

"I say what we pay into the NHS is sufficient, it's those doing the spending are insufficient.
"

And while you await some kind of effeciency magician what do you suggest we do if we need to use the health service right now and the budgets have been spent for this financial year?

I repeat - I hope you either never get seriously ill or have a huge amount of savings

Looks like we both played a part in the death of this thread, JM*

*though, perhaps we could/should blame the NHS!

NHS funding

NHS net expenditure (resource plus capital, minus depreciation) has increased from £64.173 billion in 2003/04 to £109.721bn in 2013/14. Planned expenditure for 2013/14 is £113.035bn.
The money spent per capita on NHS services in England has risen from £1,287 in 2003/04 to £1,979 in 2010/11.
The NHS surplus for the 2012/13 financial year (covering strategic health authorities, primary care trusts, NHS foundation trusts and NHS trusts) was £2.1 billion.

We need more healthy young people to come to the UK and pay taxes to balance the age gap

Trouble is, once here many may adopt the corn oil and sugar disaster diet.

No. There is an unbelievable amount of money wasted by the public sector, including the NHS. I'd eat my hat if worthwhile efficiencies couldn't be made with some intelligent thinking. You know, like businesses operate.
