Wednesday night .

If anyone can give me the best straight forwards route from J2 back towards M6 I would be very grateful .
Last time (tagging onto the back of a line of lorries and hoping they were going my way...) I ended up coming out in Handsworth and passing the baggies ground on the way back to the motorway .At least that way didn't add on too many miles, but haven't got the foggiest which way I went then.

You may be better leaving the M5 at Junction 6 and coming up through Kidderminster, Kingswinford and Wolverhampton on the A449 at that time of night.

Most of the route is dual cabbageway or at least single lane ex dual cabbageway and fairly straight roads.

Good call , thanks @Thehooperman ..... where son is living now he's close to J6 so I get on there now, but will just head straight for the A449 when I get to the motorway island instead if I'm setting off late again (with my track record of getting lost, not attempting any short cuts through to it ! )

That would be my preferred choice, if warned sufficiently early.

Enjoying a drop of red.

@Thehooperman's route is precisely the way to go when there's an overnight closure. Still too far away from the closure for most people to use and a good run of an evening.

Don't stop in Wolverhampton though. The locals will eat you, skin and all.

Some of us can remember when they were three-laning the old two-lane M5* - my route to Bristol was A449-A38 - much quicker and a nicer drive.

* None of your "smart" motorway rubbish back then.

Spent a few years around Wolverhampton in my teens , bloody rough then so deffo know to keep my doors locked and hopefully not have to stop. (Brought back memories ,when my last diversion took me through Handsworth, of driving through Handsworth when I first met hubby and he instructed me "If the lights turn to red, keep going and don't stop whatever you do around here !" )

Is Stafford clearly sign posted around Wolverhampton ? I've not driven around there for about 40 years , so not got a clue where I'm going til I reach Fordhouses area.

Really need to get my google maps set up again on my new phone.

Someone has decided to put the M5 back to two lanes now from J3 northbound, with a hard shoulder the width of 2 lanes ... wondering if it's going to change back to 3 lanes again once the roadworks further up are completed.

I think it is still clearly signposted around wolves ring road but in any case it is fairly straight forward following the ring road round, keeping on the A449.

Your satnav will take you around the ring road ok but may try to put you back on the M6 at Gailey when it is probably quicker to go through Penkridge.

Once I get to Gailey Island I shall breath a sigh of relief! I know my way from there down the main road through Penkridge ( unless some stooopid person decides to close it that one night when they see me coming  )

Motorway signs the other night were warning of A5 closure from J12 .

Yesterday it rained all day. The Met Office were spot on. :urgh:
Today they've predicted the same, and so far they're still spot on. :o
Tomorrow they say it will rain for most of the day, and I'm not inclined to place a bet that they'll be wrong. :gonk:
Monday it will rain for some of the day.
I haven't looked up Tuesday, by then I'll have ate my gun. :emo:

Used to have a saying in one job I had: "Life's a bastard, and then yer die !!" I'm changing it to: "Life's a bastard, and then yer drown." :heyhey:

Staying in a Northumberland pub in the middle of nowhere and the locals keep taking piccies of me and Bee.

Started to freak me out in a "this is a local pub for local people" kinda way until the barmaid came out with a chalkboard rubber and rubbed out one of the specials on the massive specials' chalkboard behind my head :)

It has been a long day :)

Ive workef just off J2M5 for 12 years now so have gotten used to going off piste where needed....
For me the easiest way is to follow the A4034 into Oldbury itself over the roundabout through the place out the otherside, down past sandwell and Dudley train station. At the roundabout turn left and from there whilst I can't remember the roads you cut through an estate and end up on the outer edge of West Bromwich where you can join the black country route (A41) through to junction 10 of the M6...

Yes I did that route myself on occasion coming up from the West Country. Anything to avoid the M5/M6 junction, and it also helped that I had relatives in Tividale.
