Any teenager still using this "ancient" English would be approaching their 30s by now, wouldn't they? :)

Not the one where HMV once was by any chance?
Is that the only furniture shop in the Guildhall? If so, looks likes it has ceased trading going on the comments on 'Spotted'

Just studied the map and realised why it took me nearly 3 hours to do (what should have been ) 56 miles making up my own diversion route in the absence of any diversion signs once off the m5 at J2 ! No wonder I didn't recognise any of the towns on the signs

Turns out I went in a westerly direction for miles and miles, then south westerly , then back across country in a north easterly direction to reach the M6 . No wonder Tom Tom was screaming at me to do U-turns. I thought it was just trying to get me back to a closed J2

Should have done what the lorry behind me did as the motorway was being coned off, he swung back off the slip road and went back over the hatched markings and down the closed motorway.

Wednesday night .

If anyone can give me the best straight forwards route from J2 back towards M6 I would be very grateful .
Last time (tagging onto the back of a line of lorries and hoping they were going my way...) I ended up coming out in Handsworth and passing the baggies ground on the way back to the motorway .At least that way didn't add on too many miles, but haven't got the foggiest which way I went then.

Wednesday night
Thanks, Staffordjas.

I now leave Edgbaston every Thursday at 10:00pm, heading for Stafford. Coming home via M5/J2 is always an option, though recently I've been going through the centre of Brum, then the Aston Expressway to the M6, and it's been fine. However there was one occasion when spaghetti junction was closed and I found myself on unfamiliar roads trying to find my way to J7, the Great Barr junction. I was just wondering if closing M5/J2 was a regular thing, every night. Checking AA Roadwatch may be the answer.

I think I've done this - https://www.google.com/maps/dir/52....0x48709763252edcbd:0xeb75dd9d25ed16b0!1m0!3e0 - or similar, in the past.

M5 J2-J1 has been closed quite often from 9pm onwards during the roadworks. I always try to get past by then if I can, I've quite often been the last car through as it's closing . Usually says slow, men in road which means they are coning it off. (so everyone puts their foot down instead to get past before it closes). Just said it was down to one lane on wednesday beforehand, then suddenly I was steered off .

There had been signs further back down the M5 , just before the M42 exit, warning of M6 being closed further down that night as well , something like J4-2 or J6-4 can't remember now, also signs saying A5 was closed.

When I finally got on J10 of the M6 , there were signs warning long queues from J12 as M6 closed 13-14 completely. Lots of the lorry drivers had the same idea as me to get off at J11 and come through Cannock. (At least I know that way  )

I've always headed for Wolverhampton, though I'm sure I've gone past that right turn to Bilston and then on to M6/J10, and wondered if I should have taken it.

@staffordjas - As there's no way I can get away before 10:00pm (unless training is cancelled), it looks like Aston Expressway / M6 is the way to go, at least until the M5 roadworks are completed.

Supposed to be completed by end of November.......... but then closed overnight southbound for about a fortnight on the M6/M5 junction to put all the road markings back to how they should be.
