It's behind a paywall. Does it say what 'data' they are using to suggest such a figure?
Odd, it let me see it before, it's essentially based on "excess deaths", the highest since the current records began, and assuming that most of those are Covid-related in reality. Anyway, they were suggesting it was really 41,000 on April 28th, I think.

So this would include the increase in suicides from, say, your business going belly up.

At the end of the day, the "excess deaths" figure is the only* true measure of the crisis. Whilst we need to track deaths directly attributable to the virus to check whether our strategies to combat it are working, it's the wider figure that'll be more important. And the general prosperity of the country will have an effect on this wider figure for years to come.

* actually there is another measure, but it's a bit insensitive and gruesome.
You could weight the figures according to how many years of life a person who'd died had lost. So the death of my son would count more than the death of my granny.

If its the article I read last week they were going on those above the worst year we had before covid. Or at least I think they were, I read 3 or 4 articles stating over 40k when our gov were still saying 20k.

I see we're currently worst in Europe, with deaths outside of hospital actually increasing. Amazing that some want restrictions lifted.

It will also not include people not dying from other causes, respiratory illnesses may be eased by the reduced air pollution, traffic fatalities have presumably dropped a bit, workplace fatalities also, to some extent and include people whose treatment for unrelated issues has been disrupted.

If we wait for the entire exact truth, then it won't matter, because we'll all be dead by then, but it can be a very handy tactic when the general gist is fairly clear already.

I still reckon there's a balance to be found. This morning's headlines included something about youth unemployment and school and university leavers' "prospects being damaged for years to come". It's about time things swung towards the young who always seem to get the shitty end of the stick (think Brexit).

This staying at home is driving me mad. I'm usually out helping people and dealing with councils, bailiffs, housing offices and benefit agencies. I need normality but I want to stay alive. So I'm staying home.
I think the slogan for the lockdown should have been "There's No Place Like Home".

Typical Americans - no good at social distancing.

Once this virus is under control i'm sure that a lot more people will require your assistance in the coming months/years ahead from the toll of this pandemic... stay safe for now .

I've not left the house in six or seven weeks but ive been fortunate to have my groceries , medical supplies etc delivered and i thank those people putting themselves at risk in doing so.
The least i can do is follow the advice given .

Being stuck at home it saddens me to see those around me , although loosely sticking the guidelines given , are knowingly putting themselves at risk and more importantly the health of others too.
Its fine to shop for 'essentials' , however twice, sometimes three times a day ... how many 'essentials' do you need in a day ?... As ive already stated , ive been fortunate to have deliveries but its quite obvious the guidance is being skewed to suit . im not talking about a little shopping , bags up on bags daily , then the wife/husband goes out in the car to get some more.... daily.
People in and out of other peoples houses , cleaning cars in the street when its safer to do that in the driveway when you have one ... the list goes on.
These same people then stand clapping and banging pots and pans on a thursday and place rainbows on their houses and cars as if that suddenly makes their actions acceptable...thats not helping them , its helping you.

These people are then going on to 'gossip' and socially attack others online whilst they are no better themselves.

Its not my place to name , shame and gossip on here or elsewhere ... but for those that do , think before you do.

I too , clapped for our NHS and also adhered to the one minute silence for those that passed helping us to survive , please dont let those sacrifices go in vain.

Wish my neighbours would think like that. They are constantly having family and friends around and driving off visiting daily. (And my stupid hubby has stopped in all this time to stay safe with being vulnerable with heart failure, then does a bloody stupid thing like going out and getting up close to their visitors whilst telling them to clear off our driveway )

i plan to use my jet washer as a super soaker for when that happens here , much better than telling them to clear off and a lot more fun too ;)

There's a few like that in our street, one in particular that was out once or twice a day in his car, then is there leading the Thursday Clapathon. He and several other neighbours now get their camping chairs out at 6:00pm on a Saturday, and their pints of beer, and sit in a wide circle across the road, presumably discussing what they've been doing during the lockdown.

Just scared the bin men by yelling 'Thank you' from the bottom of the path as they emptied the green bins - got a thank you back and a thumbs up, and they all looked happy.

Also managed to drag next doors down the path before she came out, she nearly always beats me to it as they usually come much earlier when I'm at work...

Just got my bin in , i think they are under a lot of pressure to get everyones emptied before bank holiday. i usually get my next door's in too but cant at the moment due to cross contamination. she understands though ;) .
Having said that i do spray mine down with bleach before handling it anyway.

In the words of someone that looks to see if things are generally efficacious -

We are forty standard deviations above the mean for weekly deaths. That is is so unbelievably unequivocal as to be staggering. I’m happy if we get a signal of two or three in a clinical study...

- we are, at least. No.1 in something.

Yay.
