I only know it was 1969 because I was over from the Missionary and the Very Rev. decided we should go and see a nature film called Kes

I had no idea Britain had fallen so far

Apparently the director likes the French

Says it all really

I vaguely remember the matchstick man.

Did anyone go into the petshop next to the Odeon to chat with the Minah bird. It wasn't for sale but was always on the counter and chatted with everyone who went in.

Oi, it was not, it was a great morning, Flash Gordon, Double Deckers, CFF movie, Sweets in the interval and a dancing competition. Free sweets, the kids had a great time. No bad behaviour at all as far as i can remember.

I prefer Mr Oi, but I won't get upset this time

I think you might find that the sweets were fired from the stage with perhaps more gusto than needed into the pack of baying children. This I took to be representative of the authority required to harness such teen spirits

However,Bob and Marcia sang that great Nina Simone record in 1969, Young Gifted and Black, and that is how I remember the Odeon. ( Wolves stole it later )

Why such a negative attitude? As you were there in 1969 then you would realise that everyone had a fantastic time. If you felt that they fired the sweets from the stage with gusto then it must have been at the likes of you for having such a negative attitude. Why do you want to put such a negative thought on good memories.

Did'nt mean to sound negative but now you mention it..

Probably because Lady Maud was rejecting my advances at this stage and I had yet to work out how to woo her . I was right out of Chelsea boots that year due to a shortfall in funds arriving from Mombassa

They also had that electronic buzzer comp which i guess was a lot trickier than it looked. I thought the Double Deckers was only on TV. The CFF always began with pigeons startled in Trafalgar Square then proceeded to have scruffy kids running up to grown-ups asking in shrill voices "Oi mista av you sin a bobbie on a bike"? Then calling to each other "Meeting, everyone down the den", where they would hatch a cunning plan to stop the Jewel Thief/Cat Burglar/Property Developer (who wanted to turn their playground into a car park) this usually involved bags of flour, itching powder and marbles. Even in the 60s from what i could make out they had bomb sites to play on, surely these locations would have been dangerous even in monochrome........

The Pink Elephant on Marston Road - before Alf got totally sidetracked by the little furry things.
Was that thehome brew shop? Many happy memories of making lager from there, then selling it around school in old grolsch bottles....

A Stafford summer was not complete until you had skimmed coins at passing Pageant floats from a high vantage point outside the orchard at the entrance to GEC

Pakki Lichfield, resplendant in an open top car complete with big hair, lead the parade and was therefore prime target if I recall, with Miss Stafford (?), ( perhaps a sales girl at Rumberlows ) getting less points for a direct hit.

I did think it was all rather extravagant at the time, in other parts of the world we used to pick up coins rather than throw them

That was the 'main' line-up, but it was originally Moe, Larry and Shemp.
