ah, mrs Birt and her daughter at the elephant and castle, I worked there as a callow youth laying lino behind the bar, I remember the bar was decorated a dark yellow brown all over the walls and ceiling (tobacco smoke that had accumulated for many years) and had bare wood floors, and even 2 brass spittoons in 1960.
And there was a roller skating ring in St Patrick st, where the car park is now at the back of the beer and wine shop, going further back in 1950 something there was a blacksmiths at the far end of the road from the greyhound pub.

edit errrors you only see after you have posted
Do I hear a top ten lost spittoons a coming up Mr age'd?

What a great little town we once had
Indeed. I wasn't around at this time, so struggle to believe what the town once looked like prior to the new roads being built. I find it quite sad looking at Staffs Past Track and seeing some of the buildings that used to stand. I know things have to move on but it seems criminal the huge quantity of buildings that were demolished for so-called 'improvements' in the town centre.

A bit of info I haven't seen on here yet about old establishments.

Tequila Red, which used to be a pub and now stands empty, is going to be re-opening as a Titanic pub and they hope to have this open by mid May, I think.

The Castle Tavern, one of the popular old "proper pubs" in the town, recently closed and is to re-open as a Greek restaurant by the name of Oddysseus.

The clock - now standing at the top of the main drag - was known as the four faced lier,as it never managed to keep time

Which is'nt too fair as by my estimation it would have had a fair chance of being correct around eight times a day

Also spent some of my saturday mornings in a cafe at the end of tipping street (across the road from Shrewsbury Arms) where they had pin-ball machines and full of bikers.
I used to go in there (x biker). This was nearer to fungs, at the end of eastgate street 'Carusoe's'

Barry the barman...blimey-just gone back 30 years in my heed

I think the Deakmeisters should be consulted by those nice Titanic chaps so they can recreate the Smithfield atmosphere complete with flash hatch and library

I do hope it is renamed the Sun Smithfield too

If approached correctly, they might be persuaded to produce a pub-styled theme pub, and all would be well.

Now there's a great idea, and maybe the could even have real beer in there, and pork scratchings and crisps with a little bag of salt in them, and domino players and a wireless playing real music quietly, and conversation and ...
I'll go and lie down now
