Perhaps the Newsletter has an archive system online?
There isn't one that I can find.
Then there isn't one.........
I am grateful for your ( misplaced? ) confidence. However, I lost a most coveted penknife in this very room about two years ago. I know it's here, but I can't find it. It's a Victorinox Mauser, if you happen to notice it..

It took me an hour yesterday to find my cheque-book, but then I last wrote a cheque over two years ago - and the date-line in this book still has the helpful 19__ to start you off.

Thing that sticks in my ming about Faces was the sizzling skilletts being carried around to the tables - the noise drowned a few voices out each time the kitchen door opened! Those kitchen doors are possibly the only thing unchanged about the place? Still in exactly the same location. Bar's been moved as have toilets and seating etc.

Walking past Gaol Square with my son the other day I was telling him what was there in that area in my childhood years......

Anyone remember -

Roller Skating Rink , A cake shop (which used to decorate easter eggs with icing flowers and writing), A cobblers and a garage (Charles Clark??? )

Also spent some of my saturday mornings in a cafe at the end of tipping street (across the road from Shrewsbury Arms) where they had pin-ball machines and full of bikers.

Indeed, rollerskating was in a building on the site where Wilkinsons is, Charles Clarke was on Gaol Sq (see G man link) cobblers was no doubt Bowens, i think they moved into the gardening business when they relocated to next to where the Espresso Cafe still is. Also on Gaol Sq was Stafford Refrigeration and a pet shop where i bought maggots for fishing.......

And the cafe would have been Mrs Ts.......nowadays a name like that would probably advertise 'a large chest for sale'.......

ah, mrs Birt and her daughter at the elephant and castle, I worked there as a callow youth laying lino behind the bar, I remember the bar was decorated a dark yellow brown all over the walls and ceiling (tobacco smoke that had accumulated for many years) and had bare wood floors, and even 2 brass spittoons in 1960.
And there was a roller skating ring in St Patrick st, where the car park is now at the back of the beer and wine shop, going further back in 1950 something there was a blacksmiths at the far end of the road from the greyhound pub.
