Beaconside campus and sports centre This month, I met Professor Liz Barnes, the new Vice Chancellor of Staffordshire University, to discuss the future of the University in Stafford. I will also shortly be meeting the new investors who are purchasing the Beaconside campus to hear their plans.

Staffordshire University will move from the main Beaconside campus this summer. The health faculty will stay at Blackheath Lane and £4 million is currently being spent in improving the site. I believe that the continued presence of the University in Stafford is vital and so welcome this investment.

The University and Stafford Borough Council are discussing arrangements for the future of the sports facilities until the new investors assume responsibility later this year. When I meet the investors, I will encourage them to continue public access to the sports facilities.

My membership's up in June, this place is due to close in July, I'm hoping it doesn't and the new owners see sense and keep it open for a little while longer before deciding you know what, this place is good for us and the greater good of Staffordians, let's close the thing down for approx.2 months (no more) on the promise it'll be back (with vengeance) before the year's out!

We have a regular badminton group that has been usibng the facility for many years. When it closes there are no facilities available in the town.
In the past when a court has not been available then Stone and Cannock are the only options. It does not appear impossible for the sports facilities to continue whilst improvement works are going on

I hope JerLef is good at convincing.
Good enough to get the new investor to see sense and keep the place open.

He's our MP, so obviously good at convincing some/enough people to see his way of thinking.

He certainly did a good job of convincing the hospital to keep its 24 hour A&E and full maternity etc.

Unfortunately, no solution has been found to keep the Beaconside sports centre open in the short-term – although the facilities for hockey will remain for another year, with changing rooms provided. I have met the new investors who are taking over the Beaconside campus and was greatly encouraged by the plans they have for higher education there. They listened carefully to the Borough and me when we made the case for the importance of sports facilities which could be used by students and the public.

Stafford Borough is undertaking a detailed survey of sports provision and needs in the Borough. It is clear to me that we have too little provision in and around Stafford; and I look forward to the publication of the report and detailed plans to remedy the shortages.

Great!?

"...no solution...." well who'd a thunk it?! That wasn't called by anyone whatsoever a year ago!

"They listened very carefully" .... wonderful - good listeners the Chinese by all accounts

Interestingly, although there is the "promise"/"commitment" of it staying open for a further 12 months, there doesn't appear to be any idea as to how the floodlights will be switched on. We have a very bad feeling.....

"The publication of the report" - talk is cheap

In other news ...the rugby posts on the college land at Riverway seem to have disappeared...... lol

Anyone seen any cash cow's getting built?

There was a solution to retain the sports facility at Beaconside and to improve them, however it didn't happen because of the arrogance of Adam Hill and Ted Maddens.

They are culpable for the loss of this much needed facility.

Stupid, arrogant individuals.

They are expanding / resurfacing the access to the football pitch from Fairway judging by the lorries full of aggregates I see going into the site.

And the rugby club could have been based there.

Went up to Beaconside yesterday
It should be the jewel in the crown of sports amenity for Stafford
But it isn't and it won't be

Anyone/everyone in any kind of power related to the decision to sell off this facility should hang their heads in shame....then resign en-masse

Wait until the planning permission application is submitted for the entire campus in about 18 months time...
