Lammascote Island - new traffic lights

If you leave the M6 at J13 and travel into town along the Wolverhampton Road, you will go through at least 10 sets of traffic lights (pedestrian crossings included)

But take out the crossings and Rickerscote Road, West Way and The Green roundabout are the only signal controlled junctions in just over 3 miles of road. I think the pedestrian crossings are justified with how busy Wolverhampton Road is.

But everyone's driving into town, so a bypass won't help...!! Arguably there's already a bypass - the M6.

Lots of towns that get bypasses have ended up with the traffic in town back to square one as the space freed up by the bypass gets filled up again.

Well this evening the kind M6 matrix sign operators told everyone there was major problems between J13 and J15, meaning everyone got off. I ended up going through Dunston as the A449 was backed up right to the motorway roundabout. It's not always about bad planning but bad actions...

Those signs don't seem to be renowned for their accuracy either....! I used to commute up and down the M6 (can't say I miss it) and wasn't unusual to pass signs warning of congestion or delays then never encounter any.... (a conspiracy theorist might think the signs were sponsored by the toll road....)

When there's a total farce on there it could be an option to shut an exit slip to stop all the traffic piling through Stafford. When hard shoulder running comes in, there'll be 4 lanes worth of traffic diverting instead of 3....

Roundabouts are fine for areas with little traffic, however, traffic lights are a necessity pretty much everywhere nowadays with everyone being so impatient and jumping in a car.

You see, it's not the amount of traffic lights that cause the congestion; it's the way they are set up that's the problem. Most in the town are just dumb! Quite a few of them in the town work exactly the same whether the town's gridlocked in daytime or whether there's just 1 car going through the town at night. It is annoying when you get a red light when there's no cars going the other way. In my opinion, more money should be spent on improving the timings and putting sensors in the road that can let traffic flow more intelligently.

When the town is dead at night (between 3am and 5:30am ish) all the traffic lights should be turned off to conserve electricity. For this to work, they should paint extra 'give-way' lines on so that if the traffic lights are not working, you still know who you're supposed to give way to if there happens to be another car coming.

...or am I the only crazy one here?

If there's a crash on the M6 I think only 1 of the Stafford junctions should be open so that Stafford-only traffic can flow easier.

Too many people think they know best for the town, without actually knowing the full consequences.
So by saying that people who disagree with you don't "know whats best for the town"..... doesn't that imply that you do think you know whats best for the town?

I'm with DB on this... its obvious too many traffic lights are bad... especially on a roundabout, the whole point is if its clear and safe to go then you should do. If its clear and safe but you are on a red light... that will inevitably cause traffic to back up. Will also have implications with more "stop, start" driving = higher costs to drivers and environmental damage.
and who decides if it's 'clear and safe to go' if it's you then please inform us all when you're on the highway so at least we have the choice of steering clear or ramming you......;)

I'm not sure if I understand your post......???

The individual drivers decide when its "clear and safe to go".... thats how roundabouts work..... surely everyone knows that but maybe now :?:

A smallish one, but not mini. It had a gated road through the centre for large vehicles. It probably went as part of the traffic light invasion associated with the Queensway. I may, of course, be hallucinating....
I know it was there because I've seen old photos of the junction from the late 70s and it was there. I'm told it was taken out so the big Abnormal Load Engineering transporters carrying GEC's wares could get down the road more easily.

I went to the offices a couple of weeks ago (my former lodger works for them) and the trucks and kit they have there is a sight to behold.

In the old days - before Beaconside was extended Northwards from Sandon Road - the transporters used to go straight across from Riverway to Corporation Street, to reach the yard at Common Road. When the extension from Sandon Road to Redhill came along the route changed to go up Weston Road and along Beaconside to The A34. This meant turning right at the roundabout and it was, presumably, removed to allow a biggersweep on the bend. Or something like that.

The press release from SCC on the Lammascote island works:

"Queensway traffic singals receive major upgrade and safety boost"

And 22 hours of the day make driving through take alot longer than it did. Infact thinking about it even with the lights people coming from northwalls way were blocking people from turning off onto the A34 tonight, should it not have a yellow box there now?
