This reminds me of a time when I frequented restaurants on the continent

I was always kept waiting for coffee and eventually realised it was to stop the establishment looking empty, given that people never like going into an empty restaurant as it can say wimcrapbab
So is that the system they are using at the post office inside WH Smiths ?

Nah, the post office just employ people to make the queues bigger at lunch times. Go any other time and its fine!

Do you think the raised bar serving area might give to a superiority complex or are we just northern scum
( beyond Hatfield that is )

Conversely Stafford folk can appear dour and dry humoured and have too fond a liking of cheap black clothing

£6.10 for two pint of ale. With being close to the college I had to pricing the bar was somewhat fun. Out pricing the students, yet being cheap enough not to get comments like this is difficult. But, the ales range between £2.60 - £3.10 on the odd occasion, depending on who brews it (I.e Timothy taylors is expensive because they can be) but the majority of the time the ales are priced on the gravity of the ale.

Timmy Taylor's Landlord £2.65 in The Bell at Haughton. As a small village pub they will not have the buying power of the larger establisments.

I hope Todd is able to 'up the game' here as I would like to give the place a go but have been put off by the recent comments on here.
Sorry, but this is a fine dining institute not a student bar

enjoy the good food, beer and service but do not judge on price, some things are better experienced than judged
Wouldn't class The Bell as a student pub and from what I've read so far of The Chambers, The Bell does offer a more consistant 'fine dining experience' if that can be achieved in what is after all, a pub.

Is this person for real!? Shocking.

Was in Chambers for the second time a couple of weeks ago on a busy Saturday night and had the bangers and mash. Nice big juicy sausages (ooh er) and tasty mash. Would have liked some peas but apart from that spot on!

If he, or she, thinks it'll be a "fine dining institute" I think not, but then again I don't think that's what they're aiming for.

Popped in for a quickie last night on way home. Nice warm pub, nice warm welcome from the chappy on the bar. Had a couple of tasters and settled on their own branded brew, Chambers Gold, nice pint.

Menu looks good but it's going to be hard to create a cosy dining ambience with those tall ceilings though, bit echoey, reminiscent of a (very nicely decorated) canteen.

Nice place, inexpensive food, should do OK. Hope so, got to admire anyone taking a punt on a new eatery in the current economic climate.

Whilst the main two larger areas can feel a bit like a well appointed canteen, perhaps not enhanced by slate table mats, the other areas can be very pleasant with the help of some shafts of sunlight at lunchtime

Because of the structure of the building the bar is raised but also partially hidden by pillars and as staff appear to take on both waiting on and serving drinks this can at times lead to delay in getting a beer

As a beer drinker I like to have a full pint, right to the brim, and most bar staff in town get this point, and that point is an emphasised one ,something that may need to be remembered here

My Salmon was fine but the portion of mash was rather feeble, more akin to a school scoop, something easily and not expensively improved. My colleague had a burger and said it too was fine but the oven chips were a disappointment and the bread bun stale

Its not fine dining and its not wetherspoons, its chambers and with a little attention to detail and a little local adaptation to Stafford tastes ( tricky I admit ) it could be a regular haunt

What works in a wealthy area of Shropshire wont automatically work in a low wage small town for example

With Ye Olde Rose and Crown due the Joules treatment in the new year competition will be keen which should be good news for going out ' in town'

All businesses can improve, I find it difficult to get my own appraised independently and so probably repeat my mistakes

When it comes to things like football and food we all suddenly become experts - i hope Chambers stays around, the town is a better place for it being here

After the poor weather put pay to our weekend of hockey, the Hubby & I opted for a Saturday of pottering around town looking for inspiration for Christmas presents. Not much was forthcoming on that front so we headed to Chambers for some lunch and a drink

Although it wasn't over run with custom, groups were sat in all sections having food and drinks, the fires were burning and it had a pleasant atmosphere

We ordered at the bar after having to hunt down the menus (not on the tables or on the bar but on the large table with the newspapers by the door) and the waitress service to bring out the cutlery and condiments was quick and friendly

I ordered the ham, egg & what they describe as proper chips & Hubby ordered the corned beef hash, fried duck egg & H.P sauce, both from the light bites menu. My ham was nice, the eggs were cooked perfectly but the chips weren't to my taste. They were too crunchy and had an odd look to them. Hubby's corned beef hash was also nice with a perfectly cooked duck egg but the dollop of HP Sauce on the side of the plate was a little poor presentation wise

In contrast to what others have reported, the service in tidying away plates was done at an appropriate juncture after we'd finished eating, not too quick you're still swallowing or too slow that the messy table becomes an annoyance but the one thing that nearly caught us out was settling the tab. After eating we sat & chatted for a while, finishing our drinks and generally enjoying being sat next to a cosy fire on a cold day but very nearly got up and left without paying. This wasn't because we were after a free meal but more that we just completely forgot as there was nothing on the table like a bill or receipt to remind us. Other places like the Bank House operate in a similar way though so I think this will just take getting used to (and a better memory on our part!)

When we did go to the bar to settle up there was a little confusion with the staff as to which tab was ours from their records but this was quickly resolved so we settled & left

Overall I was pleased with the atmosphere and enjoyed our lunch for the most part but having been there twice now, both times being ok but not anything special, I think I'll be waiting a few weeks or so before returning

Mrs King ang I had our first Chambers experience last night. Had a good range of beers on. The food and service were very good and we enjoyed the ambience. We will be returning again to try some more dishes.

Apparently they had issues with his 'customer banter', the guy has a very dry sense of humour so I suppose some people didn't like it? Although the place is also dead every time I go in, and now I think about it he had no warnings. I guess they've been open so recently that all staff are still in their trial period?

Regardless, if anyone needs a sarcastic barman let me know ;)

Is he prepared to emigrate to Ireland? It's almost a pre-requisite there.

Example..

'Where the f*ck have you bunch of c*nts been until this time of the f*cking night?'

'Lar Dunne's.'

'Well, f*ck off back there, then!'

And chase them up the main street with a pick-axe handle, in the direction of Lar Dunne's.

Possibly beyond sarcasm.

It was about half past two and the Sergeant was still in there - another world...
