A cinema planning CONundrum

The website is http://www.thestaffordcinema.com/ maybe they'll only add it to their main website when it's been refurbed to their liking.

I was just looking at the site ^above which lists -
Thursday 1 May
National Theatre Live: King Lear
- yet when i look at the NT website - http://ntlive.nationaltheatre.org.uk/productions/44084-king-lear - Stafford doesn't appear as one of the venues.

I am so up for that - Simon Russell Beale as King Lear :o - that i have already put it on the calendar. Any reason why there is (nothing will come of) nothing?

I may have to resurrect the Stafford Forum Cinema Night thingamabob idea whatsit.

The good people of Knutsford can see Inside Llewyn Davis at their Curzon this week. We are offered the same rubbish that's on everywhere else but less comfortably. So much for art house.

If they don't start delivering something at least a tiny bit different, they will last about a fortnight when a new multiplex opens.

It turned up when I looked at it, but under venues not under King Lear

Also Coriolanus 30 Jan, Warhorse 27 Feb & Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night 22 May

Being one who prefers independant and foreign films to Hollywood ones, I'm very keen to see the Stafford cinema do well. Noticed today when we were at the 10.40 showing of' 12 years a slave' (highly recommended by the way) that the cinema is branching out into less mainstream films. Not only are they showing the live National Theatre productions already mentioned by Noah & Withnail, but they seem to hae done some deal so that the Stafford Film Theatre that used to show less mainstream films at the Gatehouse is now showing there films at the Stafford Cinema. Great idea in my opinion, and as one who regularly went to the Stoke film theatre to catch movies tha masses aren't interested, I REALLY hope they can make a success of it.

Managed to pick up a leaflet and the schedule is as follows:

28 Jan - Biancanieves (Pablo Berger, Spain 2013)

4 Feb - The selfish giant (Clio Barnard, UK 2013)

11 Feb - Le Weekend (Roger Michell, UK 2013)

25 Feb - The Hunt (Jagten) (Thomas Vinterberg, Denmark 2012)

4 Mar - Wadjda (Haifaa Al Mansoor, Saudi Arabia/Germany 2012).................Can't wait to see this one :)

11 Mar - Blue Jasmine (Woody Allen, USA 2013)

18 Mar - The Great Beauty (Pablo Sorrentino, Italy/France 2013)

25 Mar - Lore (Cate Shortland, Australia/Germany 2012)

1 Apr - Blue is the warmest Colour (Abdellatif Kechiche, France 2013)

8 Apr - Mandela | Long Walk to Freedom (Justin Chadwick, USA/UK 2013)

And only 5.75 per adult. GO SEE :D

Edit: mods, any chance the title can reflect that this thread is actually about cinemas!! Thanks

How do I edit this?

I understand the film theatre made the decision to move as, with the rise of digital distribution, they were no longer able to get the films they wanted to screen on 35mm to fit the Gatehouse projector.

Maybe we'd be able to judge the situation better if we had more info than "Stafford will have a multi-plex".
3 screen? 4 screen? 10 screen?
Stafford people often complain about choice and if there is enough of the right choice then peple will not venture as far from the town for what they want.
Uncertainty and lack of transparency kills this town too often. Lets have a plan and lets have some details. At the moment we have development starting and, to my knowledge, don't even have a nailed on list of occupants.

It's great that the Stafford Film Theatre has a new home but in fairness, I think those titles are off the Film Theatre programme.

The Curzon itself, which says that it is an independent group with a 'passion for cinema' isnt bringing anything new, different or interesting to Stafford unless you are passionate about Jack Ryan. In which case you would probably opt to see it somewhere with comfy seats and a car park.

I really hope we do get a multiplex because then, perhaps, we'll get a smashing independent cinema in the existing building, showing the fantastic films that don't reach the big screens.

It's great that the Stafford Film Theatre has a new home but in fairness, I think those titles are off the Film Theatre programme. Not sure of your point. I said it was from the leaflet, the Film theatre leaflet?

The Curzon itself, which says that it is an independent group with a 'passion for cinema' isnt bringing anything new, different or interesting to Stafford unless you are passionate about Jack Ryan. In which case you would probably opt to see it somewhere with comfy seats and a car park. It's bringing live West End theatre on film, and as Goldilox says above, it's providing a place for Stafford film theatre to show their films which for the technnical reasons isolated above might would not be showing in Stafford any longer. How can this not be a good thing?

I really hope we do get a multiplex because then, perhaps, we'll get a smashing independent cinema in the existing building, showing the fantastic films that don't reach the big screens. Haven't we already got an independant cinema showing fanstastic films that don't reach the big screen, (although it is still finding it's feet)? It also shows blockbusters, some of which will make the profit that subsidises the less mainstream (probably loss making) movies? Of course we could just build a multiplex to cater for the dumbed down masses and loose another small bit of higher quality culture from the town when showing non mainstream films doesn't cover the costs.
