AFAIK you can kill the Sense UI on HTC phones, but most prefer it. My new phone has no UI on top, its just bare android 2. I'm liking it, but its my first droid phone and even simple shiz like the spirit level amuse me. Or google skymap, just not had a chance to try it without clouds yet! If you want a go give me a yell, could always meet after work for a jar at the Pie and Ale? Depends when you finish though, I work pretty much next door so could be trollied when you get there :D

@ Shoes - what HTC do you have, is it the HD2?

Not familiar with the latest WM but from what you say Android would be good for you, not because its necessarily better out of the box but because you can do loads with it....

If you don't like the SMS app then install another one... lots of people do install Chomp SMS or Handcent... I use the standard one myself.

There is also a big community for modifying and installing custom roms.... including a "ROM cooking kitchen" where you can literally pick and mix what you want from the original rom and from the decent extras (literally tick the boxes for what you want) and then it builds you the ROM to flash....

I'm surprised all this isn't available for the HD2 if thats what you have or for any HTC... there is a big community for all HTC phones.

EDIT

To add to Tek's post, I use the Sense UI on my Hero as I do think its very good. However there is a Vanilla Android Rom I could flash if I wanted to ditch it.

Another edit... if you do have the HD2, as I remember the cnet review of the HD2 said that the only thing that made it usable was the Touch Flo UI

I have the original Touch HD and i believe the UI is called touchflo, if there is an updated UI i should go into the orange shop and waste some of their time for a bit ;)


Edit: I have just been watching a load of reviews of the HTC Hero.... I really want one!

No white one available on Orange unfortunately but I imagine I'll be putting it in some sort of case/sleave anyway.

Anyone tried an RDP client yet? Seen the vnc ones but interested in a proper remote desktop, there is a demo at toremote.com but I've not tried it yet.

And yes, expect many questions! I noticed I only have 3 home screens, the Hero has 7 doesn't it?

lol nah i bought it on another contract by bullying orange about how much I hate my current handset and how unless they give me what I want I will be leaving orange in the summer when my contract is up.

Turns out that I have got the hero on a £25/month contract for 18 months and a £50 credit towards my bill which means I will be paying £400 for the device which give or take is the retail cost anyway. I'm also about to ebay my brand new never used (was delivered about an hour ago) HTC Touch HD (lost it on saturday this is an insurance replacement) so anything I get for that will obviously come off the cost too.

I will work it out once I have sold the Touch HD (which was also a free handset orginially) but I don't think I'm going to be paying over the odds for it at all.

Anyone wish to make me an offer on the Touch HD? Ignore anything I have ever said about it on this forum, its superb :teef:

I might take it off your hands to replace my HTC Hero, they are rubbish :teef:

I'm kind of glad I didn't because it was the idea of ebaying this new one as a never used unit and putting the money towards a Hero which prompted me to order the hero, else I'd just be sat here with a Touch HD and a sad face on.
