I wonder if there's a blood test for it - probably just smear a bit on some paper and hold it against a colour chart..

Having just read The Mail on Sunday (I don't make a habit of reading it!) the problem is much worse than originally I feared, places like Wembley and Twickenham are serving only Halal meat without telling anyone!

I have a solution though which is guaranteed to ensure you don't eat any Halal meat and that is to eat only pork (or go veggie)!

I object to the way Halal meat is killed!

according to an RSPCA fact sheet, 90% of animals killed for halal food in 2004 were stunned first
Halal meat: the truth

From the sound of this article, industrially produced halal meat isn't really any different from large scale abattoirs that aren't certified halal. But then as a veggie myself I'm always confused as to why people are upset by some practices but not others...

So its stunned then a bolt gun to the head, or stunned then throats slit? If they are stunned, do they care?

Most important thing is tatse, is there a difference?

I think it's more to do with suffering than the actual killing. I am not opposed to meat providing the animals are treated well and killed as humanely as possible. The idea of causing unnecessary pain and suffering to an animal does not gel well with me at all, but the idea of a rare fillet steak soaked in a red wine jus is just divine. In fact I think I drooled a little just then lol

Anyway, that's how I see it, I can't imagine many meat eaters would like it if their meat was beaten to death or whatever, as opposed to the relatively humane methods we actually use.

I perhaps wasn't very clear, but I suppose what I meant was that slitting the throat of a stunned animal doesn't sound any more cruel to me than killing it with an electric shock or a bolt gun. I suppose I could understand if people were pushing to bring the regulations controlling halal certified meat in line with the ones controlling the rest, however the outcry because products derived from halal slaughtered meat make their way into (never particularly pleasantly produced) convenience foods and airline meals just leaves me a little baffled. I suppose we all have our own lines to draw somewhere...

There seems to be a little bit of confusion here.

To qualify as Halal (or Kosher for that matter) the animal must be fully conscious when it's throat is slit, no stunning or bolt gun.

It is still very conscious when it is hung up by a back leg to bleed to death.

If we are to eat meat then the animal must be treated as humanley as possible which means that the animal should be stunned first so it is not conscious when it is killed.

If anyone else killed an animal in this way they would be prosecuted!

Perhaps if you took the time to read previous posts you would be less confused.

Yet battery chickens are fine, veal is fine, I'm not sure quality of life is applicable to most farmed animals?

Battery chickens are being phased and being replaced with housing little better than the battery cages and the production of veal in crates is banned here but not abroad.

It is just a shame that we, supposedly a nation of animal lovers have taken so long to get rid of these inhumane methods of farming!

Apologies if I have mis-read some posts.
