Bandwidth throttling - virgin

Any tips on settings for uTorrent to stop us getting bandwidth throttled? Am I right in thinking its 4-9pm thats the problem? I have a 10Mb line, how much can I get before they start messing with me? What should I limit my up/down to?

I have just rebuilt the server and seem to have 500Gb spare on it, and I think I should fill it!

It's not to do with how much of the speed you use, it's to do with the amount of data you download during peak hours, and if you go over their quoted amounts of data, then they cut your speed as a punishment, down to 2mb i think.

So I need to find the quota, divide by time they monitor for (so 5 hours), then remove a bit to allow for browsing etc. That should ensure we're always below the threshold I suppose.

Kinda awkward yeah, but your thinking along the right lines now.

Best solution, turn off uTorrent during peak hours, let it download at full whack at all other times.

NOTE:- careful what your downloading. So far, VM are the only ISP to sign up to the BPI's new scheme (British Phonographic Institution). This means that you're on a 3 strike ruling. If you're seen on torrents that are illegal, you'll get warned, then you'll get warned again, on the 3rd time around you're cut off indefinately and reported to the BPI for possible prosecution.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS PURELY MY UNDERSTANDING OF THE SYSTEM AND IS ONLY GIVEN AS MY OPINION. DON'T AUTOMATICALLY ASSUME THAT THIS IS YOUR "PASSPORT" TO GETTING AWAY WITH ANY AMOUNT OF ILLEGAL DOWNLOAD ACTIVITY! I MAY BE WRONG ON THESE RULES. IF IN DOUBT, CHECK IT OUT!

Look at the very bottom of this page:

1200MB between 4pm and 9pm or you'll get STM'd by 75%

all i do is pause my downloads during the day and let it fly overnight.. if you desperately want to maximise your download time then, yeah, set µtorrent's scheduler to only download 21:00 - 16:00.. that way, you should never get capped and you will have full upload bandwidth at all times..

tbh i rarely download anything these days anyway, because i long since ran out of disk space and have deleted just about everything i can afford to lol.. my ratio is sky high everywhere, because i'm constantly seeding but haven't downloaded anything in months lol..

Yeah, sod it, will just pause them all. Gonna limit it in the evenings too as thats when we use the net, just gotta make sure my flatmates don't run torrents too.

Think the power consumption may be a tad high, got 6 HDs in this bugger!

6 HDs? That shouldn't cause a problem should it? The server itself isn't a hugely powerful machine and I doubt all the hard dirves would draw maximum current simultaneously, unless you have some crazy RAID5 setup on the blend!

Nah, its a sempron. Moose's old Barton 3200 is a tad unstable now so had to use the socket 754 system for it :(

You still got the rig I sold you? Was that still alive, or dying? The 6 HDs are all running seperately, got 2x500, 2x200, 250 and a 120 :p

Blimey thats some serious storage space!

The system was really unstable although I am fairly sure the mobo/proc/mem is fine. I know the 6800GT is fine because its in Tilley's PC allowing me to kick his ass on UT on an almost daily basis

You're more than welcome to the bits, I no longer have the case though. I had meant to resurrect the system for my brother but that failed (unstable) and I'm not sure why. I haven't got another mobo to test the processor in. The memory worked fine in Tilley's computer though so fairly sure its not that.

Do you have any laptop hard drives lying about, SATA? I need a bigger one for my macbook, the 120 it came with just isn't cutting the mustard with a dual boot setup. Any idea what the largest it will accept is?

Its my thread, I'll derail it if I want! :P

Besides, we're at work and msn looks too obvious. Admin, any chance of a 'We are working, honest' type theme for the forum? ;)

No, but feel free to start a "random chatter" thread in General Chat if you feel the need. And being creator of a thread does not give you permission to derail it ;)

Oh, but! TBH random chat threads are OK but hard to follow if you're offline for a bit. They could be talking about anything next time you visit it!

Shoes, can't see why there would be a maximum HD size? The old 137Gb prob has been old hat for ages on PCs, would be suprised if Macs were limited by it, although to be fair I don't really know. Not got a spare though I'm afraid :(

If you don't need those parts I wouldn't mind them, could be of use. Swap you for that amp I gave ya!

Please keep this thread on topic. Feel free to start a new thread discussing this, although I still think it is something best kept to PMs - unless you want other users' input. Any more posts regarding shoes's PC and I will lock the thread!

Thanks.

With regards to the "derailing" as you forumites call it, I can't see the issue with this.

In real life, one conversation leads onto another. If you're in the pub talking to your mate about the football match, and he mentions something along the lines of "did ya see that fat s**g stood behind us there", you don't turn around and say "sorry mate, this was about football. We'll have to talk about that at work on Monday", do you!?

Now that's silly.

Surely if we all start that behaviour we'd fill the forum with shate! One thread would end up becoming 20... especially the amount of random crap which most of us speak on here. lol

Me and shoes do have a habit of derailing threads though....

TBH I can see the point, makes it easier to find stuff if its all kept seperate. Means from this thread though we'd now have another 2, like you say could start filling the site up with 3 post threads.

I would have thought this was fairly obvious. I know there are a lot of "newbies" here who have perhaps never seen an Internet forum before, but you're clearly computer-savvy, wmrcomputers, so I'm surprised you're questioning basic forum etiquette.

By your logic, we would only have a couple of threads on The Forum, because every thread would be a free-for-all and if you wanted to discuss a different topic you would just do it in an existing thread. The whole point of a threaded forum such as this one is that each thread contains a specific topic, for the purposes of separating information. If a new user finds this place while searching for information about Virgin Media's throttling policy, I don't think they will hang around for very long if all they find is a conversation between two people about how many hard drives they have in their computers.

No, it means you would have this conversation over MSN, the telephone, via PMs, or in person. If, however, you wanted to include other Forumites (for example, "My computer is broken, can anyone offer advice?") then this would be perfectly acceptable for a new thread.
