Hi

We now have fttc. Speed is about 38 down but about 1.8 up (which seems to be a policy - need to look into that more).

All the best

They're digging up the pavement on brunswick terrace to put in fibre.

It will be a channel from the old to the new fibre cabinet and also power for it. I've noticed they have started sticking promotional bills to the front of the cabs now too. Remember you don't have to go with BT Infinity there are other sane options available.

Nope found out it's virgin media cabling the opposite side of the street.

I've just been informed that BT Infinity is now available in my area - now how do I upgrade my current package to include it...

I have a lady friend who lives in the sticks so she can only get BT Broadband, no Infinity, no cable etc etc

Her speeds are dire - she has tried an accelerator but no improvement

Is there anything she can do to speed things up apart from move into downtown Stafford?

Afraid not, she is limited by her connection and BT are the only suppliers. Not everywhere can get broadband even now, what sort of speeds does she get?

Far fetch admittedly, but I know its happened.....

Sometimes houses in the same vicinity connect off different exchanges. It could be worth using the BT speed checker for the streets around her, and getting their estimated speeds. Assuming of course that their speed checker takes note of such things! Worth asking neighbours though.

An iplate can sometime help, as explained here:

The iplate (everything has to have an i on it these days!) is essentially a filter on the phone line and can help where dodgy wiring has been used on phone extensions. This can slow down broadband speeds.

Some very new installations already incorporate the iplate, so no improvement would be made. But for the price less than £20 it could be worth a punt.

On ADSL you should always use the initial plate for your connection, never an extension. Even so, I visited a customer in Dunston a few years back that had got BT in to replace all his internal wiring as his broadband kept cutting out. After they'd finished his connection was no better, took me less than 2 minutes to prove the fault was outside the house to BT tech support and they admitted they couldn't really provide it as the wiring in the street was naff. This was about 5 years ago, I'd like to think things have improved, but I suspect in some areas you are just stuffed.

Cheers, she has one and no joy
