BT Infinity & other fibre broadband in Stafford.

It would appear a grow your own method is the only way as the EU has just withdrawn all monies for rural broadband

These people are organised and laid their own fibre optic cables and now have some of the fastest speeds in the country

from another thread:

just found out the house i'm moving into in 6 weeks isn't in a cabled area, so i'm going to have to switch to ADSL :(

absolutely gutted - i just take constant, solid 20mbps for granted nowadays, i've had it for so long :gonk:

Can you get BT Infinity? There was a cracking cashback offer a few weeks ago, dunno what there is now though.
i hope so! cashback would be a bonus, but tbh i'd just be happy if i was able to get any decent internet at all.. i hate ADSL :(

I can apparently get 19Mb upstream on infinity and 60ish down.
when you say "apparently", does that mean you haven't got it and this is what the website/friends claim? or you have got it, and this is what the services alleges, but you don't get it?

the postcode checked says i'm not currently serviced, but am available to take orders/express interest..

I don't have it, was about to switch but found myself in an 18 month contract with virgin :(

My main thing was the upstream, I don't need more than 30Mb down but would like at least 10 up TBH.

Just moved back to Stafford after a year away, new house has access to both Virgin Media cable (75mbps down, ~10mbps up) and BT Infinity (75mbps down, 20mbps up). Had both installed, nice and speedy. I was worried it would turn out we'd only be able to get ADSL.

Ordered Infinity. Guess what never turned up. My order number appears incorrect so cannot chase online. It was Ok when I gave them my MAC code. Cannot get them by phone, I can get ton them to sell me Infinity again ? I might cancel both BT line and the order, press them for refund and claim for not turning up.

That's a bugger! Saying that I always call sales for any company if I have an issue as they always answer faster than support and rarely charge. Plus of course at present it is still a sales issue, not a service issue.

BT have got wise to that even pressing wrong buttons does not get you to an operator

TalkTalk said they would pay £100 towards the £117 they'd want to release me from a contract because apparently all the problems are fixed now. We shall see...

Virgin cancelled now, last day with them is October 5th. Now who do I choose for fibre.......

EDIT: Apparently they want my (not so) superhub back and the tivo too, didn't realise I rented them!

Yeah Virgin you rent it and if it breaks they fix it, sky you own it but if it breaks (out of warranty) then you are screwed (unless you can threaten to cancel and get them to give you new kit).

Fair enough, I had planned on nicking the HD out of it but oh well!

Just had an amusing chat with a talktalk rep about my BT socket. Its in a silly position, in the hallway with no access to a socket without sending wires over my front door. Apparently it doesn't matter that there is no power nearby, because the router is wireless! Its a new line anyway, so I guess I'll just rip the old master socket out to ensure they don't try to put it there again.

if you go with BT. part of the install requires them to put the socket wherever you need it.
mine was already where i wanted it anyway, but i couldve had it moved for free.
i remember when they came to set mine up , they had to replace the ancient wire running from the house back to the pole, again, all done for free.
