How do people find that the prices at the butchers compare to the prices in the supermarket?

I use Johnny Johnston on Stafford Market, and it definitely works out much cheaper than the equivalent at Sainsbury's.

Depends, you buying Taste The Difference or Value?

I think the main issue with butchers nowadays is that we just don't know what we want! In Tesco you look at a pack of bacon and think thats OK/crap for the price. At a butchers you're thinking it may say £5/kg but how much do those chops actually weigh? Plus last time I was in the market one stall didn't show prices! The food may be worse in a supermarket, but you see exactly what you get up front.

Saying that, I still use John Anslow whenever we have a BBQ :D

I have Tesco Finest sausages, Tesco's own (not value, not finest) bacon, value mince, value turkey pieces (cheaper than chicken).

Would check the prices myself but because the butchers are usually small you don't get chance to window shop before getting pounced on :D

i've started going out of my way to ensure a constant supply of wall's smoked bacon (asda don't sell it, so i have to make weekly trips to tesco just to get bacon lol).. it really is the finest bacon i've ever had.. zero shrinkage, zero white bits, gorgeous flavour, and barely any rind.. only £2 for 8 rashers :D:up:

prior to this discovery, i used to always have asda's "extra special" applewood smoked stuff.. now, that is still good bacon, but this wall's shiz is some next level bidniz, yo! :pig:

Can't beat a decent smoked streaky bacon, although the lack of rind on these is appealing. May try next time I'm in there.

There is FANTASTIC bacon sold at the butchers on the Sandon Road, near the Tap and Spile. It is so thick and very very smokey - so much so that it stinks my fridge out! Also all their meat is from local farms...

You mean John Andslow? Brilliant food from him, can especially recommend the bacon twizzler thingies for BBQs. Always go down well, think they're only 25p too.

Wow! I would have said the same if I'd thought about it more! We got those for a BBQ a couple of weeks ago and are now addicted... I asked the butcher and he says they're belly pork in chinese style sauce. Also the chicken kebabs are yummy... Tried a kangaroo burger last weekend, not sure about that 1 like.

They are impressive, wish he'd do a spicy one though. Will ask him! MyCult, did you ever see if he wanted a website? May offer him one for a forums discount :D

He does a chilli and Lime 1 I think - not my thing but the other half liked them... I also recommend the beef and onion grillsteaks. Nom nommy nom.

I generally get bacon straight from the Deli counter, at least then its not so thin you can see through it :D

i'm not a fan of thick bacon, me sen - unless it's part of a main meal (e.g. bacon, mash 'n' gravy ).. for straight up bacon samichs, i much prefer your standard issue thickness (~3mm) and just layer that shit up, yo!

Yeah i'm with you on that one. Johnny Johnston on Stafford Market used to do a fine smoked back rasher which was about ½ an inch thick. Proper stuff. Mmmmmmmmmm.
