I had a 280S for a short while - lovely, but just too thirsty.

1998 - 2004 focus

Length 4.36m
Width 1.7m

2004 ==> focus

Length 4.33m
Wdith 1.83m

4 inches wider overall - bugger all really. They do look quite a lot bigger though - clever design there for sure!
wow, are those stat's defo correct?? if so, like you say that is some clever design ("kinetic design", as ford call it)! it feels a lot bigger to drive/park/etc.. as mentioned in the other thread, it was exactly the same 1.8i duratec engine as my previous focus, but drove like a dog compared to it.. i attributed this to the extra weight, but i suppose it could have been more rigid EU emissions rules resulting in harsher cat's clamping down the BHP and stuff..

I think when I get rid of my Smart in a years time, i'll probably get a diesel Fiesta Titanium... they do look nice and after what DB said about the features on that spec.... sounds great.
you won't be disappointed.. it's so much fun to drive, and so smooth.. fair enough, it's only a 1.6, but it's got a fair amount of poke cos it's such a little car - but loads of space inside!

:/
woah woah woah! i've had 3 foci, and don't remember any of them looking that hideous!! i've defo never had anything with white dials :barf:

i notice that's left-hand drive.. perhaps there's a big difference twixt UK & US interiors?

that being said, i'm not a massive fan of the new fiesta titanium centre console.. modelled on a mobile phone, apparently.. not as user friendly as my previous focus..

A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to get my sticky little mits on a XR2i in gleaming white, complete with black windows and a white stuck on strip across the windscreen - we named it The Stig. Unfortunately 1 evening in the quaint streets of Castletown a bloke of the Polish persuasion decided that the passenger wing mirror was better than any football he had seen in his life. Last I heard he had left the country.

Old focus 1.8 : Weight 1125 kg
New focus 1.8: Weight 1307 kg (+182 kg or two people)

The gearing is also slightly longer (not by much, mind) in the new one which is more economical than sporty which will be why it feels like it's picking up less. It actually has 8 bhp more but at such a high rpm it makes no difference, 180 kg and longer gears will definitely have in impact though.

I think you're probably right; on the Top Gear website the interior photo looks like the new Fiesta interior:

The interior in Shoes' photo is awful though!! What's with the vertical dashboard on the passenger side? Makes it look like a Transit! :barf:

Trouble is with the Alfa's, a mile after leaving the dealer, 20% of the car has already dropped off
You don't buy an alfa for the resale value though, you but it because you love it. An alfa is NEVER going to be a sensible investment, but if you want a sensible investment then

I think when I get rid of my Smart in a years time, i'll probably get a diesel Fiesta Titanium... they do look nice and after what DB said about the features on that spec.... sounds great.
which will give you good, reliable, cheap motoring, and as DB said the fiesta is quite a nippy car. In fact it may even pay to have two cars and only use the alfa for pleasure to keep the mileage low.

If you want something to drive for pleasure, then like everything else you'll have to pay for it sadly. At least these days they're reliable cars, I understand they used to be a nightmare. "I would never recommend one to a friend" - Jeremy Clarkson circa 1996

yeah, the more i look at it the more i think your pic isn't of a focus, shoes!

look at the space inside (much larger), and the angle of the sides of the windscreen (almost vertical).. the centre console has cup holders, and then an arm rest/stow-away compartment behind them.. my focus was big inside, but it couldn't manage that - the arm rest folded down to cover the cup holder.. and look at the distance between the window controls on the door & the door handles, and the size of the wing-mirrors - everything looks mahoosive!

so yeah, to re-iterate, that doesn't look like any focus i've ever had.. maybe it was mis-labelled on the website you got it from?

It seems to be this car:

It is a Focus, but not as we know it!

The new model we're talking about is going to be for both US and UK markets though, isn't it?

Edit: Found here. Website's a bit dodgy though. Requires the use of your 'stop' button.

yeah.. ford want to become a global brand - so instead of having "ford europe", "ford asia", and "ford usa", all with different models & lines, they want to unify the brand.. hence all their cars becoming so much bigger, to satisfy the american market! and hence why i ended my long-term and beautiful relationship with foci, and went with a fiesta instead..

I could never go back to Ford after living with a BMW for a few years.
Incredibly the most unreliable new car I ever had was a Honda.
