Cash-strapped Councils Buy Essential Jags

The In My View column in the freebie print E&S refers to the county council's previous fun and games with official cars, and mentions former chairman, George Newman. Apparently he was 'a larger than life character with a lively sense of mischief'. Would that be the same George Newman who in the 1970s was convicted of fraud relating to cars and planning permission? What a little tinker!

So I take it that you're OK with councils saying they're short of money, while at the same time buying new £40k cars to clutter the roads? It might be a drop in the ocean, but it's worrying that the In My View column made light of what had happened with cars in the past, when the council chairman was sent to prison.

£40k for a car seems pretty standard.

By the fact the roads of Stafford are full of nearly new Audi BMW and Merc, it seems the car rental market is booming

Can’t believe more people are not up in arms about this, the chair of Staffordshire Council was on the news last week saying kids would have to walk to school, if they couldn’t pay the fees to transport them to school even though the fee had increased from £200 to over £600 a year, the route to the school is totally unsafe, the roads are a disgrace, but everything is fine for Staffordshire county council who can afford to buy brand new cars for £40,000 plus each

Up in arms

Interesting

If you can't believe the people of this nation are moronic, selfish, ignorant, imbaciles you clearly have not been paying attention for the last ten years

£44k since 2015? So just under £15k a year?

Paltry amount of money, making a fuss for some clicks. There’s far bigger wastage than a car to worry about, you’d be appalled if you saw the amount wasted on contractors that work as slowly as possible because they’re paid by the hour - sadly that isn’t a number that is kept track of as it would require a hint of organisation.

Fifteen grand a year not worth bothering about?

So, they won't even notice if I stop paying my Council Tax?

A much more paltry amount.

Councils have a duty to act in the interests of the taxpayer and make reasoned decisions. Squandering public funds to buy inessential, ego-inflating cars while at the same time making cuts to services isn't justifiable. 'Customers' don't have to pay for something they're not getting.

Do you accept that there is a need for some kind of official car? If so what would you consider an acceptable model? Should the mayor be driven to official functions in a Smart car? Or a 25 year old Vauxhall Nova?
