Had a stroll past the old factory site at lunchtime and noticed the gates were padlocked and not a soul in sight, i guess it's shut down completely and St Modwem are trying to let the site which pretty sizeable with the surrounding land. For anyone not sure it's the old Bagnalls/English Electric/GEC factory just over the bridge from the Railway Inn........

Or remove the protection for what was supposed to be the bypass and suddenly that land becomes very attractive for houses </council in ulterior motive shocker>

I see Redrow are advertising their soon to be built but with a spec of only 50 years homes on the old Universal site.

There must be some value in a site that size

Main works had a nurse.
Indeed, and 24hr cover as well. Their medical centre was just inside the st leonards gate for obvious reasons it was very close to the foundry.........

They even had their own ambulance and would often use it to transport victims to hospital. I can remember three occasions when people were carried off nailed to pieces of wood. On two of those occasions the wood had to be cut down so that the doors would shut. And it wasn't even Easter.

There was a wages snatch around then, but how 'armed' it was I can't really remember either.

I recall the land rover being battleship grew, and prior to blagging the payroll at the mri the young tearaway was faithfully delivering my daily newspaper via paddy diffin who had a shed to the rear of where the old wardstaff electrics shop is.......
