But, but, but.

Their property, their choice.

It's only a pub, not life and death.
No, it could be an Asset of Community Value.
That would make it far far more important that a tattoo studio, nail parlour or Turkish barber.
If it was "their choice" they wouldn't need to be applying for planning permission.

Sorry, you've lost me there.
In reply to "Their property, their choice", no, any substantial changes to the property rightly means the choice of the planning committee, in the public good, not the choice of the owner.

There always had to be planning permission in order to construct houses but I get you now.

Well put your money where your mouth is then, rather than expecting the landlord to indulge you and a few others, out of their own pocket, for the one visit you might make a year. Go on, buy it, bet your pension on it. Not difficult is it?

But no, with the backing of your 'gold-plated' pension you can sit back and snipe at others trying to get by.

Anyway, the opinion of nobody on here is going to change what the owner wants to do with their own property to safeguard their future.

"put your money where your mouth is then"
At my age ?
And I've only got a tiny fraction of the £850,000 I think they were asking for the pub not long ago.
"Trying to get by" might have been better done by offering the pub at a sensible price. Stonegate had the nearby Red Lion at Derrington up for sale several years ago at about £200,000. Maybe double that with the Shropshire Inn being on a main road. But quadruple it !!

Alnwick sees around 350,000 visitors each year. Outside of Christmas I would say the number to Haughton is negligible
But it didn't look like more than about a dozen visitors either day I was there, no where near the 960 you suggest.

Well as you present such a compelling argument then you must be correct and it must be the Northumberland tourist board who are cooking the books.
Well I can't be certain about numbers but Alnwick certainly looked very quiet compared to Stafford - but Staffordshire is said to have had over 28,100,000 trips during 2018, 26,600,000 of which were day trips with more than 1,500,000 staying for one night or more. That's probably because Staffordshire is much more centrally located than Northumberland.

Weren't we talking about Haughton?

Ah yes.
I can't find the statistics for day trippers to Haughton.
That'll be because there aren't any. It's not exactly a tourist destination hot spot is it. It's a place to travel though on your way to somewhere else.

The residents have made clear their choice of pub.

Your missing the point, repeatedly. It's almost as if you are choosing to.
My point is that not offering a PUBLIC house for sale at a sensible price is not only depriving the local PUBLIC of somewhere to socialise but also depriving someone else, of an appropriate age, of a career in the hospitality industry.
It'd be just like one of the County Council farms nearby where the ageing lessees expected to be able to cease farming and retire there !

Where I am, the cops are allowed to do random stops and there are checkpoints in the vicinity on most nights. In England and Wales, in general, if you aren't driving 'noticeably impaired' and don't hit anything or have any other cause to be stopped (lighting issues, etc), then you can do it for a long time before you might see a breathalyser.

Back to the original derailment. There are 1,300 people here and four pubs, nearly down to two after Covid. There were seventeen in 1990.

The second nearest acceptable pub is in a place with 185 people and two pubs, although one (the other one - phew!) seems very likely to be gone shortly. I may get a further update on that tonight...
