The only thing wrong with The Fox is that it ruins nearly every other pub for you. Anywhere else just feels like an evening I could have spent there.

I have only been once but are, if someone suggested a pub meal I would want it to be there.

"I went out for a ride with a proper cyclist recently, in a bid to find out why I am so slow"

"Cadence"?

In cycling, cadence (or pedaling rate) is the number of revolutions of the crank per minute; roughly speaking, this is the rate at which a cyclist is pedalling/turning the pedals. Cadence is related to wheel speed, but is a distinct measurement.

down a gear pedal faster!

I am just getting back in to cycling, the fox might just be the motivation I need!
Just thought would post another cycling event coming up. Saturday 21st June 9.30 to 12.30 at wildwood shopping centre and 1 pm to 3.30pm baswich library.
Looks like just a promo event for cycling in and around Stafford but they are doing free cycle servicing

In the interests of disambiguation, one assumes you are talking of the Sky Rides alluded to on the page before this one?

On a tangentially related note, is anyone on here familiar with the South Downs Way? If so can i pick thine brains?

Oops, sorry. The Fox was my target destination :)

Went all the way to Newport on the cycle path 55, (old railway line). About 12 miles. not too muddy. If it had been a couple of weeks ago would probably have been a quagmire! :barf:Took it easy, as my dog was running along side me off her lead. 24m took 3 hours so she ran just under a marathon in an average of 8 miles an hour. :bananafunk:

As I said not too much water, though enough for my dog to have a swill and a soak! Got slightly narrower and rather more vegetation 3/4 miles from Gnosall, and then really messy, muddy, rutted, right on the County border. Two signs apologising for the state of the track from a local farm; suggesting that if people are unsatisfied they should contact Staffs County Council. It even gave away laminated notes giving contact details. 'contactus@staffordsire.gov.uk' 03300 111 800, The chief executive, Staffordshire County Council, 1 Stafford Place, Stafford, ST16 2LP.
Very community minded of them? :strange: Was a tad concerned about what looked like vehicle ruts, and obvious evidence of tree pruning/removal, in the same spot. A vehicle had obviously come down the Shropshire side of the trail, which was very well maintained, probably to carry out this work. Call me cynical but it might have been someone from Salop who carried out the work, then they thought better of it, realises the mess they had maid, then believed Staffs should sort the mess. This theory is probably bunkum , and doesn't hold water, unlike the cycle path. Still was an enjoyable ride, weather was excellent, did it in a vest, but not sunny enough to get burnt! :bravo:

I rode from Castle Town to the A41 on Route 55 the other week and picked up one of the laminated cards containing details of who to contact about the 'muddy problem' which I did and a Mark from SCC emailed me basically saying that the problem will be sorted in Sept.
My other concern especially on warm days when route users my wear shorts are the encroaching nettles and low overhanging branches, again Mark informed me that the 'Rights of Way Team' ( whoever they are) will deal with that problem also, now the Route is patrolled by a Sustrans volunteer ranger called Paul who tows a little trailer behind his bike, I do hope that he isn't the 'Rights of Way Team' and that he alone is responsible for the upkeep of the entire route?

A word of warning. If you're not used to cycling on a surface akin to Brighton beach then give the route from Doxey through to Haughton a miss for a few days. How I didn't get a puncture from all the loose chippings or skid off is purely down to skill luck.

I've just been looking at whether a saddle bag or frame bag is 'better', or is it just a matter of personal taste? I've just bought a bike pump but the damn bracket's holes aren't wide enough apart to fit on to the frame. Therefore, I am leaning towards the frame bag, just so I can fit the pump in it, amongst the Allen key set and puncture repair kit. So bikers, what's your poison?

I'm still unsure if weight on the bike or yourself is better, I buggered up my spine cycling to Wales but I can't help wondering if I'd overloaded the bike rather than myself.

That was my main concern of riding a good distance and getting a puncture, so I invested in installing Slime in both tyres.

It's not just the risk of punctures on that stretch at the moment - it is quite difficult just to stay on the bike. I've been getting off the lane after the motorway bridge and going via Seighford.

Some of the surfacing of cycle routes over the years has been imbecilic - the one to Baswich even had a Cyclists Dismount sign where they had made it virtually unrideable under the railway. Easier to put up a couple of signs than actually do it again, properly, I suppose....
