Deshi Khana Indian Restaurant

I've just been and had another chat with the folks who are taking over the Castle Tavern....the restaurant will be called Deshi Khana (signage going up right now) and they aim to be open within 2 weeks. They're waiting for the licensing dept at the council to sort things out. They previously had a restaurant in Keele but the lease ran out.

I love a good curry and I'm really looking forward to trying it out!

Well folks...Deshi Khana is opening this Friday! There are some interesting dishes on the menu that I've never heard of before, so I'll work my way through them and tell you what I think.

Well, being a nosey bugger has certainly paid off...I've been invited to a pre-opening do this evening where we'll get a free meal! I've got my eye on the Deshi Meat Massala as I don't remember seeing sirloin steak on an Indian menu, unless it's in the 'English food' section.

This is a bit of a tricky review because we were invited there and the food was free, so people would probably expect me to be sympathetic to any bad points. Luckily there were no bad points at all, and that was the view of everyone who I went with (...and there were about 15 people who I knew in total).

First off we were given a platter of vegetable samosas, chicken tikka, sheek kebab and onion bhajis. I could have happily sat and eaten them all day. The samosas were lovely and spicy...hotter than some of the people on my table were used to, but they were the most vocal on how nice they were! The chicken tikka was amazing (according to db...and I'm not going to elaborate cos I'm sure he'll describe it later), the sheek kebab was moist and perfectly spiced, and the bhajis are on my Christmas list.

The mains (as we were forewarned) were on the mild-side, as they were trying to cater for everyone. Sometimes that means flavourless and crap, but this time it meant that the spicing and overall flavour of the food would make you entirely forget that any other type of curry was available.

We got some (free) extra samosas because they were so delicious, the landlord of the local pub got a bag of curry which he pretty much inhaled, and all-in-all I cannae wait to go back!

Following my boiler (actual boiler, not the wife) troubles this evening, have decided a little treat is the order of the day so have booked in for this evening. Anyone else?

They previously had a restaurant in Keele but the lease ran out.

I used to live up that way before coming to Stafford and if they are the lads that had the restaurant upstairs at Keele Golf centre then WAHAYAYYAYAYAYYYYY !!!!!!!!! as it was absolutely amazing food (albeit a bit weird entering via a golf club and going to the loo in the locker rooms).
In fact, looking at the menu I would say it's them...mmmmm Rezella :)

yeah, soz i'm a bit late to this thread, but some of us have jobs to go to :teef:

The chicken tikka was amazing (according to db...and I'm not going to elaborate cos I'm sure he'll describe it later)

innit.. i have never ordered chicken tikka masalla in my life - got nothing against it, but i would normally go for something a lot spicier.. however, this chicken tikka was amazing.. properly gorgeous, and everyone at the table agreed.. i'm not normally a fan of coconut, but this had just the subtlest hint of it which gave a lovely, tiny bit of sweetness that really brought the dish to life..

i complimented the geezer waiting on us, and he said he was very glad to hear it as apparently it was his dad's own recipe, that he had been perfecting for over 10 years, and he was very proud of.. i can ruddy well see why!

basically, everything andreas said: the place is lovely inside, the waiting staff are a proper laugh and can't do enough to help you (without being annoying and too attentive), and the food is smashing stuff..

As mentioned above, I also went this weekend on their first official night (so unfortunately paid for my meal :( ) so here are my thoughts.

Since it was the first night, I thought I better ring up and book, asked for about 7:30 and was offered 7:45 so that was fair enough.

On arrival we were quickly seated but then sat for about 10 minutes without menus. When they did eventually bring the menus over, he said "i'll come back for your drinks order" and then we didn't see him again for about another 15 minutes... my mouth was drier than the sahara at this point.

Eventually managed to get some drinks out of them and sometime after that managed to order our food.

Two popadoms each with pickle tray, shared a fish tikka for starter and main was Saag Paneer Korma for the wife, Deshi Bhujon with chicken for me and garlic naan / pilau rice.

The popadoms etc were spot on, hard (impossible?) to get those wrong. The fish tikka was good too, fish was a bit crispy on the outside and lovely and moist on the inside. Not massively flavoured, more delicate - could have done with a bit more flavour for me but thats personal taste.

My main was great, highly recommended, comes really well presented on a huge plate. Was perhaps a tiny bit too salty for my tastes but still very nice. Rice and naan were also good.

Unfortunately the biggest dissapointment on the night was the wife's saag paneer korma - being a Vegie, it wasn't good when it turned up as a CHICKEN saag paneer korma. The wife picked out a chunk and bit into it and it was paneer, I did the same and it was chicken... was very lucky that she got paneer or else she would have been gutted.

Reported it to one of the serving staff who was VERY apologetic and quickly went away and got the wife a new dish without the chicken this time. As I say, he literally apologised every time he came back to the table and did replace it very quickly and luckily no harm done. Good job i'm a greedy bugger that tucks into the wife's food :)

Bill for all of the above plus 3 x Cobra and a pint of coke came to £36 after the opening offer discount. Didn't seem too bad.

Overall my feedback would be:

1. The older guy with the glasses seemed to be running around like a blue arsed fly taking orders whilst the other staff were just clearing tables etc. I think this led to the slow service - to me having to wait 20 odd minutes before you can order a drink isn't acceptable. The place isn't huge and wasn't too full when we were there even... I could live with a delay on food if its busy but at least get a drink in my hand. So I think the guy with glasses needs to either delegate to the staff he has, or get some that can help him. Also because he was so busy and rushed, he didn't have time to chat with guests, or even time for plesantries... it all just seemed very slow to get someone there, then a bit fast and furious when you did get someone.

2. The younger guy who we spoke to later on who sorted the chicken korma dish out was much better in taking his time and making you feel relaxed... not sure if that was because of the issue we had or because it was quieter (although seemed busier at this point) or just his manner was better... anyway this guy would have been perfectly able to help the older glasses guy take orders and stuff so needed him about earlier in the night.

3. Make sure you don't put chicken in a vegetarian dish! The communication breakdown must have happened between the guy writing it down and the kitchen... the guy who took the order definately repeated it back as "saag paneer korma" so who knows what happened....

Finally, I definately think we will try the place again. Its a promosing start with a few niggles that should be ironed out once things settle down. It has a lot of tough competition to live up to but as long as it does iron out the issues then it should get my business purely on the basis of convenience, although if not then its not much further to walk to get to Malabar or the one round the corner from the Cinema whose names eludes me.

yeah, i think that's fair enough.. the chicken-in-a-veggie-dish is a pretty big faux pas (can you imagine if it was a certain scatalogical forumite who had have been on the business end of that?? lol), so i think it's great that all the other factors were so good as to placate you on this point. :)

as above, we had such a lovely time, so i really think it's worth anyone giving it a second chance, as you clearly intend to (i know it sounds like i work for them, but i just 1) love curry and 2) love to see stafford business do well)..

You mean the excellent Narvana :)

I really, really hope that both restaurants thrive, as that will mean they both have to strive to maintain the fantastic standards they have already set for themselves
