Dexter

please tell me some of you have been watching this? it wouldn't surprise me if no-one has - what the hell are itv thinking, putting it in such a cack time-slot??

this is without question the best TV program in as long as i can remember.. as most of you will know, i'm a huge Heroes zealot (well, as long as we pretend the second series never happened), but even that can't touch Dexter.. i've watched both series now, and i just couldn't face life without Dexter until the new series starts in September, so i've started reading the books..

just finished Darkly Dreaming Dexter yesterday.. the first half of the book is pretty much identical to the TV version - to the extent that parts of it have been lifted verbatim by the producers.. but several key elements, and the ending in particular, are completely different.. definitely worth a read if you're a fan!

looking forward to starting Dearly Devoted Dexter next week :)

Am whole heartedly agreeing with you there Mr. Dyrteeness. Tis an excellent piece of TV with a rubbish time-slot. Those who haven't seen it should.

The books are on m Amazon wish list!

it's nothing like Heroes - i just mentioned that because i have previously gushed over it 'pon this very forum, and i wanted to get across how much better Dexter is!

you will love it though cookie.. it's on late night on wednesdays (i think) on itv - but you've already missed half of it.. see if you can get liam or some other internet-savvy buffoon to chuck them all on a DVD for you..

it's only short - 12 episodes per series - and it is seriously the best thing you will watch all year..

edit: or if you want to start with the books, search amazon for either "dexter" or the author, "jeff lindsay".. as i say, the TV version deviates from the book quite drastically towards the end of the first novel, and as a result of the different ending i'm pretty confident that book 2 onwards will bear no relation whatsoever to the remaining TV incarnation!

i reckon the book is the way forward for the mo- at least then i can try and catch up with the story so far and buying myself a bit of time to get technical.

well, i look forward to hearing that story lol..

on the off chance that you're in the market for a new DVD player, make sure you get one that is "divx" or "xvid" compatible.. you can get them for around £25 these days.. once you've got that, sorting you out with complete series such as this is a doddle :)

i personally prefer the TV version to the book, so would certainly recommend you read before you watch, rather than the other way round, so perhaps it's good the ol' fashioned text version is your only option at the mo :)

much as i love my gogglebox- theres only so much tv i can fit into my day and most of that is done through catch up as it is.....so the reading option will probably be the one i take. plus its cheaper- and im still smarting from the holiday! ;)

A few posts under my belt
I'm a huge fan of the Dexter, having watched both series. The writing is so so good, and Michael C Hall is perfect for this role.

I wasn't so keen on the book though, so I'm glad I managed to get my copy for free :P

there's just been a news story on radio 1 newsbeat about the fact season 3 is starting tonight on FX.. very weird that they should just randomnly advertise this on radio 1 - it wasn't even connected to an interview they had secured or some other BBC segment to plug, it was just in there as any other news story :?:

edit: ah right, i think this is the "entertainment news" so maybe that explains why..

shame season 3 was pretty shit.. and the books are gash, so there's nothing to fill the void 'til the new season starts in the autumn.. i really hope season 4 is a return to form, i can't believe how disappointing 3 was :(

What didn't you like about the third season, dirtybobby?! I thought it was as good as the first two.

A very cool preview of season four can be seen here.

everything.. you could tell that the producers were aiming for a wider, "network" audience, as the whole thing was horrendously sanitised and dumbed down.. dexter no longer killed to sate his desire, he became a typical vigilante, hunting down baddies who had wronged him in some way.. this would have been ok, if it weren't for the fact that his whole, established kill style went out the window.. gone was his meticulous attention to detail and ritual, and instead it was just "hey i'm a serial killer" *bosch" "you're dead"..

the worst part for me, though, was the way they pointed out every obvious little detail, like they thought the viewers were morons.. it's a long time since i've seen it, but memorable awful moments were when la guerta had the report of the killer's vehicle, and circled "blue", "hummer" and "headlights" in thick black pen while thinking of prado's blue hummer (with headlights).. y'know, just in case we missed all those details..

another one was when deb went round anton's place, only to find him missing.. the camera pans up to the trees, complete with dramatic music - oh no! the trees have been trimmed!! fair enough.. but, just in case we're too stupid to make the connection ourselves, deb says (to no-one, since she is on her own) "oh no! the trees have been trimmed!!".. as if that wasn't bad enough, they then felt the need to make her go even further and finish with "the skinner has been here!!".. yes, i'm pretty sure you made that obvious 5 minutes ago, stop labouring the point

then there was the whole pointless quinn non-story, the weird homo-erotic relationship between la guerta and that defence attorney woman that went nowhere, and the absolutely atrocious "climax" to the series..

i just couldn't believe how a show could go from being the best thing on television (seasons 1 and 2 were amazing) to being such awful, hole-filled, dumbed-down crap :(

just watched this.. i hope to god season 4 lives up to this trailer! definitely points towards a return to form, imo.. plenty of references to his "dark passenger", and back to the old dexter who kills because of a "primal, sacred need", not some just generic vigilante mission.. and the trinity killer looks brilliant, just the kind of nemsis/fixation dexter needs :)

Season 5 starts tonight in the US!

And I realised last week I'd not even watched season 4 yet, the shame! Watched 4 episodes last night, and is looking good so far. I think most other series kick off again tonight too, expect more Family Guy, American Dad, Weeds (I think). America only does good TV in the autumn.

Watched more today, just one episode left. TBH series 4 is almost as good as series 1 and 2, I thought 3 lost its way a bit but its def back on track. And Lithgow is a great actor, very believable.
