Literally sit on my bed and watch that bit fill up. At least it's kept the gypsies away while it's been fenced off.....
Should've kept my big gob shut............... 4 of the buggers turned up yesterday. God knows how they got them vans down there......

A relative of mine discovered he had the ultimate butt in his garden. When doing some excavations in his back yard he found an old Victorian brick built storage tank. He was so impressed with it, when I was visiting one day, he insisted I take the inspection lamp and climb in. Fortunately it was empty at the time; very impressive brick work, it had originally been connected to the spouting with lead pipes.

Having been inspired by the find in his back yard he started digging up various other areas around the house and found another at the front. It was the same size, about 1000 gallons. He connected that one back up to the spouting, fitted an old cast iron pump, and used it to water his tomatoes.

A friend up the road in Ireland decided to collect the rainwater from the back of the house and see how the supply went, before going to the trouble of piping the front in, as well - it is rarely below full, even though it actually rains much less than people will have you believe.

He used a modern, blow-moulded tank, above ground, so that gravity was still on his side. The tank is much like his (far better concealed) oil tank.

We live in hope that someone will steal all his water one night....

It seems to me that it should be normal to use rainwater for flushing toilets, etc.

For anybody interested in underground water storage vaults, as @Laurie61 describes, I would suggest not Googling "ultimate butt", and certainly not if you intend regulating the flow by means of a plug.

I believe an underground water butt is out home automation mk. 3. As of last night we have remote greenhouse watering.
