Eccleshall Road petrol station to be demolished as part of site upgrade.

The upgraded site will see the existing petrol station and a nearby house demolished

Plans have been submitted for an upgraded 24-hour petrol station in a Staffordshire town - with an existing filling station set to be demolished.

The current site, on Eccleshall Road at the roundabout with Stone Road and Grey Friars in Stafford, would be torn down, along with a nearby derelict house, if a planning application submitted to Stafford Borough Council this week gets approval.

The proposed new petrol station would include:

  • New storage tanks and replacement pumps and pump islands
  • A convenience store and an a food/drink counter.
  • Nine parking spaces and four cycling spaces
  • A landscape buffer
The application, submitted by Eurogarages, stated the proposal would be a significant upgrade to the site.

The document states: "Key to modern roadside facilities are opportunities for motorists to rest and have access to facilities, food and drink (a common misconception is that roadside services are simply for the sale of fuel).

"As such modern petrol filling stations now have an ancillary retail offer to provide basic top up items, the range of goods is such that it would not be possible to do a full weekly shop. In addition, food and drink outlets (falling under Class Use A1) are also provided as part of the retail offer within the kiosk.

"Euro Garages currently have a programme of building new sites or modernising existing sites which are located at strategic points on the highway network.

"These sites depend on high volumes of passing traffic and, typically, they provide a modern, clean, mixed development of Petrol Station with ancillary Convenience Store, sandwich / food / coffee offer and Drive Thru’ facilities."

The nearby house set to be demolished is, the report states, in a bad state of repair and vacant.

A decision on the application is expected later this year.

It would be nice to adjust the positions of the entrances, the one adjacent to the roundabout still surprises people, on occasion.

It's always important to consider how many cycling spaces are on offer at a petrol station.

Is four really enough?

At the Saint-Rambert-d'Albon service area, on the A7 motorway south of Lyon (which can only be accessed via the motorway) there is a row of some 20 or so cycling spaces.

Those crazy French...

Actually, come to think of it, the are also a fair number of them at Budaörsi rest area on the M7 in Hungary.

Only in Stafford. One of the most hazardous junctions in the town, and they want to make it worse.

Mmm...

I wonder if they'll fill in the perpetual pothole while they are at it?

What a shock it must have been to discover after a few years empty that the house was in poor condition and has to be demolished.
Shirley it would be better to build an access road through the cemetery, but perhaps this would have compromised the essential cycle parking facilities.

Any bets how long it'll be before the first crash between vehicles pulling in for the pumps & someone pulling out of the "customer parking" in front of the shop.

Have to agree with this. Those lights so quickly after the roundabout combined with the garage entrance causing traffic to often queue on to the road is an absolute nightmare for drivers unfamiliar with the shitness of Stafford councils road planning.

*I realise that is a poorly constructed sentence!

As for the eternal pothole, I reported it, as have many, and the report on the website was that they'd been out to inspect it and no pothole was found. Blind tw*ts!

The new petrol station seems to have been in planning stage for some time. By the time it's eventually built we'll all probably be driving electric cars, or possibly on bikes.

Hopefully they'll include a couple of EV charge points in the new version.

I personally don’t see why we need even more petrol stations... perhaps we could put something more useful there instead?

We have 12 in the northern half of Stafford alone, and another 5 in South Staffs.

Because for the time being and for the foreseeable future ICE cars outnumber EVs massively, so there are huge profits to be made.

The fact that it's the last petrol station before driving to j14 will be reason enough....
