The new petrol station seems to have been in planning stage for some time. By the time it's eventually built we'll all probably be driving electric cars, or possibly on bikes.
It won't be long before the new petrol station is up & running. The old one & the house next door were flattened last week!.

Are there 12 in Stafford in total?
I think there's only Wolverhampton Road to add to my list above, for the whole of (what I would call) Stafford. Making eight.

In the past, we had Charles Clarke / Freedom Caravans Aldi), Newport Road (opposite Tesco) and the Stone Road National (car wash), plus a possible one on Silkmore Lane (Co-op).

So, that's twelve, maybe, But probably not all existing at the same time.

There was one where the car sales place is in Moss Pit, when it was a Renault garage, but that's out-of-town to me.

Blimey! And as often as I still use Attwood's Roundabout and Lloyd's Garage as location points, I had completely forgotten them...

There was also Charles Clarke in Gaol Square, but that doesn't overlap with a lot of the others.

There was one next to The Trumpet (Radford pub now ) as well which I often used. The building is still there.

Plus , as above, one about where the right hand carpark as you drive in the Silkmore Co-op is now , next to the South End Club. My mate at work left to run the Silkmore one with her hubby.

Yes, the Trumpet one - a very 'quiet' business after Charles Clarke arrived over the bridge - it was car sales for a while after that, also 'quiet', before being subsumed into the neighbouring premises.

I remember car sales at the Silkmore Lane one (Boynton?), but am not sure if it was still selling fuel when I arrived here.

I used to fill up at Silkmore one on my way to see hubby in West Brom from 1979 to early 80's , so was still selling fuel at that time .

Enjoying a drop of red.

The late, great Eric Knott?

There was also a petrol station on the Island, where Johnson's Dry Cleaners are. Did there not used to be pumps on Jones & Alcock's forecourt, or have I imagined that?

Yeah, the island was Attwood's.

J&A is possible, I have a vague memory of them.

And the pumps were still there next to Browse for many years after they ceased to function - still showing the old prices. You could often see people trying to use them, for years - possibly ten. They were even referred to by Dave Lee Travis on his Radio 1 show - I thought that might get them listed.

Yes , I used to work with his wife Jean Knott in MRI/ GEC Measurements. Eric used to work there as well.

There were 2 petrol stations more or less opposite each other where the Island is now .

When we got married in 1982 and went to see the vicar at his house beforehand, the couple who had just become owners of Browse next door to that petrol station site at the time , were just coming out from their pre-wedding appointment. Can't remember if the pumps were still operational at that time.

The pumps showed a price like 32p a gallon*. It certainly started with a 3. That would suggest they ceased to function before 1975 at the latest**. I'm not sure I remember them in action, but then, I don't remember the Silkmore Lane ones, really.

* That's 7p a litre for the youngsters....

** There was a short phase where pumps couldn't handle prices over 99p a gallon, so they were adjusted to show half the price and it was doubled at the till. But, that wouldn't apply, if they were showing less than 50p as the price.

Walking past Walton Garage this afternoon jogged my memory. Used to have a couple of pumps there as well. Was more expensive than the others, so only used that if that was as far as my empty mini could limp/be pushed from around the corner from my parents house.
Noticed today that where the pumps sat is still slightly more raised up than the rest of the old forecourt.

It’s possible one or two entries may be out of date or duplicate... for some reason there’s an Esso listing on Wolverhampton Road

Seems it’s actually 7, which I’d still argue is plenty enough without making them bigger

There is an Esso on the Wolverhampton Road, at the junction with Prickerscrote Road
