I recently heard/caught the back end of a radio advert/commercial/public announcement, announcing something along the lines of, and please be aware i didn't catch all the info, that if i were married and one of us earned approx. 44k and the other 11k, i'd be entitled to some cash off the government, somehow/kinda.

Though that doesn't match our income, being a DINK-y and unmarried and u's not knowing much more detail about me and my circumstance, just asking and if someone could do half the leg work, anyway hazard a guess if i'm entitled to anything tax-y credit-y?

I'm very middle of the road, so having looked at it briefly today, i find i'm not entitled to much of anything, other than being one of the lucky ones - lucky enough to be a middle of the road DINK.

Salary sacrifice, is about it.

I'm so sorry Proac, it was a joke.

I don't know who's more embarrassed.

I do believe that it's customary if you break off an engagement that you give the ring back.

Also @1JKz if you asked him @proactive to marry you and then change your mind isn't that "breach of promise?" ;)

Let's hope he doesn't decide to sue you.

Anyway methinks whatever next..... Kyoto or hopesdad proposing to me?

:o

It's information you saw is about income tax which is different to tax credits Tax credits are complicated - subject to hugeh errors (usualy the tax credits HMRC dept errors)

Marriage Allowance lets you transfer £1,100 of your Personal Allowance to your husband, wife or civil partner - if they earn more than you.
AND
Tax credits are a mechanism to redistribute income to people on lower wages. There are two types: child tax credits, paid to families with children; and working tax credits, paid to people in work on lower incomes.

More than 70% of families on tax credits are in work. All the 1.4 million out-of-work families claiming tax credits have children and receive child tax credits only.
(Not alot of people know that)

So, the marriage allowance only works if you are in a different tax bracket to your OH? And if you are, then the loss of £1,100 of allowance doesn't tip you into the next bracket?

I think its mainly aimed at working partners on relatively low joint incomes where one is earning below the tax threshold. The partner on the higher income claims part of the other's allowance. If the extra £1100 pushes you into higher tax bracket then it isn't worth it (probably the intention)

How do I edit this?
I transferred my allowance to @Wormella & we had a bit of money back (you can back date it) & it brought her down a tax bracket, so it is worth doing if you're eligible.

Not quite, my salary sacrifice for Master Wearn's child care costs brought me down a tax bracket - which made us eligible for you to transfer your allowance to me - which then gave us a bonus - either way it was a welcome little boost. :rich:
