Is it lawful to go completely around a mini roundabout and head back in the direction from whence?
Unless specifically excluded at whatever mini-roundabout you are considering, it is not illegal - however, the Highway Code suggests that you should avoid the practice.

There are places where it may even be advisable - attempting to turn right down Radford Bank from the private road at the top is not for the faint-hearted - better to go left and around the roundabout (carefully), allowing for the surprise that this may cause others...?

Only if you're driving in a mini.

I see lots of people do this on the mini roundabout by the station, most people seem to be aware of it but it could still cause some trouble if people are not expecting it.

If you are going to do it, even at a big roundabout, you need to consider the expectations of others and be ready for them to make assumptions.

Today, I saw a BMW with its indicators in operation - at a roundabout - honestly!

It was at the newer of the two roundabouts at Norton Bridge. Luckily, I was so intrigued by this phenomenon, that I stopped it the hope of being able to obtain photographic evidence.

I say "luckily", because it would have been better if he had been using the ones on the other side of the car, or, indeed, the usual practice of none-at-all.

Still, no harm done in the end and I suppose that he is still at the bottom of the learning curve.

Perhaps there could be some sort of sign attached to cars where people are struggling with indicator use, like the L and P plates that one sees around the place - a T plate, perhaps.

Mmm, thinking about that, I suppose the BMW sign should be adequate?

I may be wrong but doesn't the Highway Code just say the driver should indicate when leaving a roundabout? What more do you want, directional indicators as well.

Plus it was a German car so the indicators work on the other side of the road!!!!

It was even better than that. He was indicating left, to exit the roundabout, but at the exit after the one I was waiting at. I suspect that he may have some hearing difficulties, as he seemed to be quite good at lip-reading what my opinion was, as he sailed across the front of my car. He then decided to change tack on the indicator front and apply the right-side indicators, and then turned left off the roundabout at the next exit, as he originally intended, but having caused another car to come to a pointless halt, in the expectation that he might have meant to do what he was indicating.

Classic stuff.

What is it with Stafford station and selfish dicks who either stop in the middle of the road to drop off blocking people from getting off Station Road onto the station frontage, or morons who think it's ok to just wait anywhere for the people they are collecting. Everyone can get 20 minutes free parking in the multi storey car park there, why don't these idiots use it instead of blocking the road. Seriously the selfish inconsideration of some is disgustin. The place was so rammed with this idiocy today that even a police car on blue lights couldnt get through :(
