Coalition Agreement published

The Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have released a document setting out the agreements reached between the two parties on a range of issues.

These are the issues that needed to be resolved between us in order for us to work together as a strong and stable government.
It will be followed in due course by a final Coalition Agreement, covering the full range of policy and including foreign, defence and domestic policy issues not covered in this document.

I'm slightly mystified by the 55% thing - if you can just pick how much of a vote it takes to bring you down, why not pick 90% and put your feet up?

Because they are as safe at 55% as they are at 99.9999% but saying 55% gives the illusion that it could still happen even though it never could...... like when the councils do consultations on where to build new houses or roads.... they want you to think and feel that you have a say in things but in reality they'll do whatever feathers their own nest anyway.

You do still want to leave yourself the option of holding an election before the fixed term is up if it's clear that parliament simply can't function (I believe in Germany a few years ago the Government passed a vote of no confidence in themselves), but you don't want to leave it so that your coalition partner sees the possibility that they can walk off and bring you down. The change to 55% is just enough to remove that temptation from the minds of wayward Lib Dem and Conservative backbenchers, and makes the Government a bit more stable.

Good luck to you i say.

Wanted to change earlier post saying 'you' joined hands to 'they' joined hands on walk to war as i didn't intend personal attack.

As things stand we deal with the realpolitik; vis if people really desire coalition politics then they will wish well of coalitions whatever the hue.

You may surmise that i am a diehard Labour supporter but you would be wrong. As far as i am concerned i support politics that supports. There was a personage who used to drink in the Lynton Tavern who, when watching the football and asked who he supported, would say "I support Goals!" That's the point isn't it?

I support goals also - i just hope whoever presides over our lives understands that they are dealing with the lives of actual people, not economic numbers.

P.S. Have been trying to do some statistical analysis on your number of people who voted x, y, z in 2010, 2005, 1997 but have lost both piece of paper and thread (suspect tis this one but tis long). Preliminary findings most interesting.

Edit. found it - can't be arsed now - will work on it.

Americans often seem very confused about the meaning of the word 'immigrant'.

Perhaps if they asked some of the real natives...

That there above is wonderful.

Apropos of nothing concerning the Stafford results of the recent experiment in democracy but for larks, my favourite gag of the above;

"I love food - I don't eat anything else."
