There's no reason why it has to be a "do nothing" role, it was for Geoffrey Howe and Harriet Harmann but it certainly wasn't for John Prescott and Michael Hesletine. It's not a clearly-defined constitutional role so it has as much power and scope as the Prime Minister chooses to give it. And of course when SamCam goes into labour later this year Nick Clegg will be de-facto Prime Minister for a brief period.John Marwood said:Clegg bought off with the do nothing role that Prescott and Harman managed so well
ie the title but no authority..
My money is on three elections in 12 months
Alan Sugar to decide the results..

Vince Cable get responsibility for "business and banks" apparently....* There will be a "significant acceleration" of efforts to reduce the budget deficit - including £6bn of spending reductions this year. An emergency Budget will take place within 50 days
* Plans for five-year, fixed-term parliaments, meaning the next election would not take place until May 2015
* The Lib Dems have agreed to drop plans for a "mansion tax" on properties costing more than £2m, while the Conservatives have ditched their pledge to raise the inheritance tax threshold to £1m
* The new administration will scrap part of Labour's planned rise in National Insurance and will work towards raising income tax thresholds for lower earners
* A pledge to have a referendum on any further transfer of powers to the EU and a commitment from the Lib Dems not to adopt the euro for the lifetime of the next Parliament
* The Lib Dems have agreed to Tory proposals for a cap on non-EU migration
* The Conservatives will recognise marriage in the tax system, but Lib Dems will abstain in Commons vote
* The Lib Dems will drop opposition to a replacement for Britain's Trident nuclear missiles but the programme will be scrutinised for value for money
* There will be a referendum on moving to the Alternative Vote system and enhanced "pupil premium" for deprived children as Lib Dems demanded

From what I heard on the news this morning, the Liberals were hinting that they were "very pleased with the tax solutions to be put in place" when questioned about the £10k threshold... although they couldn't give a definite yes or no until the policy doc comes out later today.tek-monkey said:although apparently now the Cons don't want the tax threshold raised to 10k.

0955: The Lib Dems have got another of their big wishes - we've learned that there's going to be wholesale reform of the House of Lords, early in the parliament, to make it fully elected. And the method they're going to use to elect it? Proportional representation, the system the Lib Dems have loved for so long, says the BBC News channel's chief political correspondent Laura Kuenssberg.
