General Election 2010 - Stafford results

The House of Lords. New Labour refer to themselves as 'progressive' and yet they left this affront to common decency. I tried to explain this situation to someone in Ireland a few years ago and he wouldn't believe it - his actual words were 'No, that's how it was when they were here..'

We understand that under the new agreement for fixed-term parliaments, the only way to remove the government between elections would be a vote of no confidence with the support of 55% of MPs. At present, any no confidence vote requires only 50%, plus one MP.
Very interesting, this means that the Cons cannot be voted out with a no confidence vote should the coalition fall apart. Is this the start of a stitch up?

EDIT: To clarify 50% is 326 seats so at present they need the Libs to hold on. 55% against them means they only need 45%, or 294 seats. They have 306 so are laughing, as from what I can tell that was the only way to get rid of them? If the coalition collapses do they still need a new election?

Clegg bought off with the do nothing role that Prescott and Harman managed so well

Alan Sugar to decide the results..
There's no reason why it has to be a "do nothing" role, it was for Geoffrey Howe and Harriet Harmann but it certainly wasn't for John Prescott and Michael Hesletine. It's not a clearly-defined constitutional role so it has as much power and scope as the Prime Minister chooses to give it. And of course when SamCam goes into labour later this year Nick Clegg will be de-facto Prime Minister for a brief period.

So, now we have seen our elected representatives focused on the pursuit of power above all - under the guise of democracy

Here are top ten tips for corruption, erm, I mean power..

1 Court attention at all cost
2 Dont trust your friends, use your enemies
3 Conceal your intentions
4 Always say less than necessary
5 Guard your reputation
6 Get others to do your work but always take the credit
7 Avoid the unhappy and unlucky
8 Make people dependant on you
9 Re-create yourself
10 Make sure you went to Eton

All power corrupts, but we need electricity...

Would one of the resident Tory types explain to me what Cameron means by what he describes as "Deep social problems" ?

In his first ever speech as PM he listed his top 3 things to be done as :

1 Budget deficit - obvious
2 Electoral reform - yehyeh
3 Deep social problems...

I am naturally suspicious of what lies behind such a prominent statement, one that he also used in electioneering. It would appear to be a warning of legislation to come and feels very sinister to an old cynic such as I.He could have instead used the word equality or talked about poverty and helping people

I am completely guessing but I imagine it could mean:

- the "I have a right to this" culture
- the "everyone owes me something" culture
- reliance on benefits
- the "look out for myself and screw everyone else" culture
- gun and knife crime
- crime in general
- chavs
- lack of discipline at school and in the home
- integration of communities (i.e. acceptance by the racial majorities but also willingness to integrate by the racial minorities)
- drugs

As I said, complete guesses and I may have missed a few.

Has anyone else realised that a vote of no confidence in the Government is going to increase from 50 to 55 per cent, thus, even if all the other parties voted together they could not bring down the Government?
