Greyfriars Prayer Hall

I was very surprised to read in last night's E&S about the planning application for a two storey extension and minaret to be built at the Greyfriars Prayer Hall!

I was surprised because it was the first I had heard of it and a decision on the application was being made last night!

Does anyone know the difference between a prayer hall and a mosque and also what is the significance of the minaret?

It's been there for some time. On rare occasions there can be a small group standing around outside chatting - that's the only reason that I even noticed it..

I have known about the prayer hall for years but didn't know about the application for an extension.

I am in the process of reading the planning application notes at the moment, there are a few very unhappy people!

There has been quite a lot of publicity about this application. I gather that the access point was described as being via Snows Yard and the people from FMS objected because of the increase in traffic there. The reports suggested that it is already very busy at times which surprised me as it has certainly never seemed that way on the occasions I have been queuing for the car wash there.

I am amazed that I have missed this, I read the E&S every week perhaps I will have to buy the Newsletter.

Not got a prob with it myself, although I'd prefer them to just take over one of the empty units like mfi!

It was run in the E&S about 3 weeks ago....a very small piece inside, all it said was the planning app had been put into the council and the rest was pretty much the same as whats in tonights paper.
I dont think its the sort of thing where they do the loudspeaker calling to prayer, no one has mentioned that, they were mainly on about the parking troubles it might cause

This is it, for those that haven't noticed it. It's been painted a bit since then, I think.

I thought that the strange Eastern-looking building on Eastgate Street would have fitted the bill.
In the E&S tonight, stafford council spokesman said that they passed the app because there were a lot of chimneys around there and the 28ft tall minuet would not look out of place.......forgive me, but i dont see any chimneys!

I may have misled you. The first one is the actual site in question and there are six chimney stacks in view in the picture, plus the extractor vent from the chippy. The second picture was merely my suggestion for a more mosque-like building on the other side of town.

I knew exactly what building you meant before even looking at the picture, it's being renovated for something at the moment.

They've done quite a nice job on it. I haven't been down there since March, but I must go and have another look soon. I might open a competing mosque. Do you think there's a market? Is the Greyfriars mosque Sunni or Shia?

You have me all wrong Mr Marwood!
Really?
Really!

I have no problem with Islam (or any other religion for that matter as I think they are all a bit wierd), I have a couple of issues I disagree with but on the whole no better or worse than any other group of religious fanatics.

Thought that would get you going, just indulging in a little 'trolling' (new word I learnt).

We shall see if our brethren at the prayer hall agree with you tomorrow!
