ive just found this picture of leona lewis at the elle style awards wearing a hat very similar to those that i make.

now id quite like to use this on my facebook page to promote my stuff...but i can only save it off the site as a bitmap.

how can i convert the bitmap file to a jpg file to upload it elsewhere?

thanks,

If you're using Internet Explorer, you can usually fix this by completely emptying your cache and restarting the browser. If you're unsure how to do this, just google "internet explorer [version number] empty cache", where [version number] is the version of IE you are using (e.g. 6). I'm sure you will find step-by-step instructions. :)

For future reference cookie, just open the bitmap using Paint, and then go FILE, SAVE AS and use the drop down to save it as a JPEG or any other format you like ;)

Fair enough. I just figured you would want to fix the "can only save as .bmp" problem, which is a known bug in IE, as you may want to save other images in future! :P

im not saying its my picture, im not saying its my hat...im just saying its a great example of someone, who happens to be famous, at a prestigious event, to be wearing something similar to what i sell.

im not saying u said it was your hat

however, the image will in all probability be owned and therefore have copyright on it

I am not going to tell you what to do or what not to do

Just pointing out that nothing is free

( for free )

In MyExperience lady if you are up front and provide a link back to the original and credit the picture to both the BBC and the photographer there will be no come back.

The internet is FULL of syndicated content.

John Marwood is spot on in what he is saying though.

You can use this image but make it very clear it is not your work and is more an inspiration for work you can/will produce.

I am just trying so save someone from getting a nasty big bill...

The internet may well have many pieces of work that has had its copyright breached' just as homes around the country are full of stolen property

It is when the author's work is used in relation to commercial gain that you may find yourself in doodoo, although I acknowledge the odds are still in you favour

However, if the author or those acting for the author, discover that an image is used in this way and believe there is a reasonable chance of recovering loss then you may get a big bill

If you went into M & S and pinched some frozen fish fingers, cost £5.99 and got found out you would not expect to get away with simply paying for the fingers, more like you would be up before the beak and get a £60 fine. a 10 x 'fine'

The same principal will apply for the breach of copyright, although you will be dealing with lawyers not magistrates

If anyone fancies using images by Getty I would strongly advise against using them for anything as they are extremely active in recovering losses. The BBC use Getty images.

As, I believe, MyCult has indicated previously, there is sophisticated software that can search for 'owned' images across the net, including your website
