poor fire personel
On my last shift we actually went through our proceedures for dealing with Skunk factories that are springing up around the place.

Lots of electricity (usually meter bypassed, or stripped from the street lighting!), high power bulbs, loads of condensation and insulation, quite a fire hazard, and Staffs have been to a few! Missed out myself, but you never know your luck! :aboot:

PS I'm on duty tomorrow, so I've dusted off me wellies, and dug out my lifejacket! More rain forcast!

Does anyone know how much of our council tax has already been spent on the these flood barriers? Not to mention the transitional state the park areas have been in during the flood barrier works.

I'd say they have performed no better than 2000! Can't remember the exact sum but twas Millions, not all council tax though.

Sorry my point is - they haven't worked very well
They seem to have done pretty much what they were intended to do - which was to flood the park and Sainsbury's car-park rather than the main part of town. The park will recover fairly easily with a few new bedding plants. The surface of the paths (like the new bike path) are a resin which dosn't wash away (all the paving and brick work in town would be severly damaged). You also have to remember that this level of flood is catagorised as 1 in 100 year (which is why the last one was 7 years ago!) and the mayority of the flood defence system is to deal with more normal levels like those last week which would usually cause some disrution to roads but only got mentioned because the new bike track was flooded.

When nature wants to mess with us she's not going to be stopped and the more we pump out our pollution and cover up the absorbent land with concreate and tarmac the worse it will get.

I like the slight ironc that there was a meeting of the local Internal Drainage Board yesterday!

Edit - I found this link which describes the project better than the news http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/regions/midlands/567079/567090/893833/894284/450306/?lang=_e&region=Midlands

One point it makes is that the old deffences would have fallen down in another flood.

Spoke to the experts this am while on a call, and it shows what I know. What the good Doctor says is absolutely true.

It seems that the conditions were at least as bad as 2000, and that the flooding in town would have been much worse had the precautions not been taken, a qualified success then!

I am sure Sainsbury's, the Curry Kuteer, Wetherspoons, The Coach, etc might not agree, but we have escaped lightly! OK there is flooding, but it is largley restricted to areas where little damage has occured.

Firefighters from Rugeley are up at that dam at your end Cookie, with their high Volume Pumping Unit, demonstrating that the Government are working towards a National emergency service.

I like the photo they used to illustrate the dog which attacked the puppy. As if you don't know what a vicious dog looks like.
