Investment to revive the eastern distributor road?

Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander said: "We're putting in place a new arrangement with private pension funds - which is the first time this has been done in this country - to try and unlock pension fund money to go into infrastructure."
Ah, raiding the private sector pensions now! When you retire do you get a small piece of toll road?

Are we there yet?
Was bound to happen at some stage. They've pretty much bled all other resources dry. Would be nice to get a certificate with a little pic of your own cats-eye tho...

And I don't seem to remember using that thread title... Has the Adminator been back? ;)

If (and its a big if) they ever got any of these funds in Stafford, they would build the WDR long before they ever build the EDR.

What with the WDR opening up large tracts of land for development added to the fact that a great number of the decision makers in Stafford live in Baswich and the like not wanting the EDR running near their houses and destroying their nice views....

Two problems i can see

1. "The Treasury hopes two-thirds of the £30bn earmarked for infrastructure schemes will come from the National Association of Pension Funds and the Pension Protection Fund."
- They will only want to invest if there is some guarantee of a return, which would suggest the roads they propose to build would have to be toll roads wouldn't they?

2. "He said the £5bn would come from areas where there were "under-spends" in government... and a crack-down on tax avoidance."
- Yeah, right - don't hold your breath Danny.

I very much doubt the EDR is "among (the) 40 projects earmarked for help".

I'm always here, more or less. ;)

I thought I would add mention of the EDR to the thread title for two reasons: To stimulate debate, and to explain why a national news story was in the Stafford Chat section. Hope that's OK. :)

So, does this mean we finally get the EDR?
Short answer = no!

Slightly longer answer- the bypass would almost certainly be prioritised below lots of other projects on the basis of a cost benefit analysis (which all infrastructure spending is based upon).

Stafford does not need more bypass....

Agreed - we'll not get one for years as it's not worth spending all that money just to make my journeys much quicker.... shame

No one cares about Staffordshire. The recently announced Enterprise Zones showed this. Stoke-on-Trent is DESPERATE for investment (pedants beware, for the purposes of this Stoke is still in Staffordshire, even if not in Staffs CC), yet got nothing. I know they are claiming a victory of sorts because of the Wolverhampton one, but really that's nothing to do with us.

Therefore the chance of central government allocating money to our region is unlikely.

For the record though - Stafford DOES need a bypass. It shouldn't, but as a result of frankly absurd planning decisions we need something to make it easier to get from one side to the other. Way before my time, but we have a town centre with retail parks on the main routes south and north. 3 supermarkets (soon to be 4) circling the town centre. Not to mention the silly PC World one. Really what were they thinking? And that's before you get onto the insane numbers of traffic lights.

Apparently more roads = more cars, regardless of the cost of motoring soaring. Personally I don't drive, and rarely use the motorbike, but have to say our town center is utter shite to drive around/through. I think we do need a bypass, if only to stop motorway traffic fouling up the town itself and allowing locals to move more easily between different sides of the town.

I also think we need a bypass/link roads. I know lots of people think it's not environmentally friendly etc etc etc but, I also feel it is delaying the inevitable. Taking traffic away from our town centre would let local traffic flow more efficiently and the town would thrive, I believe. Letting this happen would also give us chance to put in place a public transport system that would be more effficient with less traffic jams, thus being a better long term solution.

I know people already who drive to stone and even stoke to shop, because they hate driving through Stafford.

I really like Stafford town centre but the traffic and lack of decent shops means it's only useful for banking/post office/boots/travel agents type stuff rather than going 'shopping'.
