I have been known to buy more than just the odd strange tool - and will try to set some more challenges shortly.

This has had some use, but I like it simply because they are known as 'monkey strainers'.

Do you have a monkey and do you require it to be strained?.
I dont have a monkey, but I know a woman up Doxey who goes to 'parties' where things like that are used...................

It took me about 25 years to stumble on one of these - again, it has a very specific purpose.

Is that a Moomin?

Markerat and I would like to put forward the opinion that this might possibly be for some kind of drawing office

It is, indeed, for use on drawings and the like, but it has a very specific purpose and you need to be a good bit more specific before any points will be transferred in your direction.

I think its for like, if you have a drawing thats a certain scale and it needs to be another scale you use that thing...Not sure of the proper name. Markerat should have known he worked in the Technical Drawing bit of Dormans as was...

Edit; is it a polar planimeter :) Markerat to the super google machine

I feel that you may be thinking of a pantograph:-

but it is not such a thing - still no points.

It is indeed. Points to the Forum's favourite rat - when I can find a post by him...

A truly clever device - capable of indicating the area of any shape, however irregular, merely by moving the indicator, in the magnifying glass, around the perimeter. The adjustable arms mean that you can adjust it to give readings in a variety of units, depending on the scale of the drawing or map in question.

Edit :- Point awarded.
