Laptop problems since updating to new system - possibly BT Internet related

I switched on the laptop on Sat for it to say there was a new system, it would only take a few minuites blah blah.

Anyway it took the other half 4 hours because it kept not recognising our e mails address, passwords etc. We had to reset everything, then it didnt recognise the new ones. Our neighbours had the same problem.

Now I can recieve e mails but I cant send anything out...any idea why?

This all happened since bt decided to change their BT mail account.

Sorry Carole; your original post only mentioned a laptop, and the problems you describe wouldn't be caused by an Internet provider, so I changed the title as it will help draw attention from people who may be able to help you. :)

It sounds like maybe your router has updated its firmware or something and has lost/forgotten your login details (that's a complete, probably wrong, guess, based on the limited info available here!).

I would recommend phoning BT Internet, as I suspect they are the only ones who can help, as it does sound like a problem with your Internet connection.

Is this something to do with BT splitting from Yahoo and setting up their own email system? They have been threatening this for many months. Some people were swapped up to 6 months ago and some had problems. I am still waiting to be swapped.

However something similar happened to my partner when her BT Yahoo account was hacked, watch out for people on your contacts list getting strange emails if that is the case.

Either way as Admin says, contact BT Internet. If you do have access to a computer the best way is via Live Chat online. The links are available on their contact pages, one of the pages is for "Problem with logging in (BT ID)", where the Live Chat hours are 8am to 8pm Saturday & 8am to 6pm Sunday , but you may want to go for the general broadband problems one open every day 7am - 10:45pm. They do say "Password stopped working? If we think your email account has been compromised, we will lock your account."

I had to help my Dad do his yesterday, via Skype as he's in Spain. Mine worked fine, but his tablet tablet wouldn't connect. What email program are you using? There's a good troubleshooting guide on the BT website.

If you are using email client software such as Outlook, Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird etc. then the chances are you need the SMPT (outgoing email) settings altering if they have made some changes at their end.
