I got told by someone that one of the reasons he voted 'Leave' was that "before we joined, I could go to France without a passport. The EU put a stop to all that".*

He also thought that "we need to strengthen our borders".

* I presume that he meant that he could get a one-year 'temporary passport' over the counter at a post office ( and dole offices, for some odd reason ).

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/one-year-passport-to-be-abolished-1421597.html - I think the Spanish were fed up of having to arrest people who had done a runner using one.

One of my favourite things about this whole process is how often David Davis has 'threatened' to resign.

Anyone that tuned in to his appearance before the Lord's Committee hearing would appreciate just how hollow a threat it is.

You know how it's a recognised phenomenon that in the United States demented folk will choose 'death by cop' as their way out? Poor old Davis is longing for the heave-ho that will free him from the intractible nightmare he finds himself in.

The back benches seem all the more soft now. don't they David?

Remember when leaving the European Union was just something you could easily get yahoos and harumphs for from compliant constituents?

Now you've a whole country to run, things look a bit different, don't they?

Completely fecked up, haven't you?

Your ''threats' are just laughable to us.

So the time comes, as the madeleine recall us to temps perdu, where we have to take stock.

How are we all?

Are we all in a good place? Are we feeling good?

It's a month shy of two years - still ready to celebrate Independence Day?

No?

I realised yesterday outside of batty old colonialists on the internet tilting at windmills for powerful hoovers, blue passports and fishing rights, I had never heard anyone actually use the phrase remoaner. I am waiting for the day and wonder if I am likely to pull the same face I pull when I see a white person with dreadlocks or someone using the expression "waaaaaaazzzzzaaaapp" .

Former Conservative cabinet minister John Redwood said the starting point for any new customs system should be existing arrangements for importing goods from outside the EU.

"We have a perfectly good functioning trade system with the rest of the world at the moment," he said.
