The mother of missing Madeleine McCann has appealed to whoever is holding the three-year-old not to hurt her.
Madeleine is believed to have been abducted from the family's holiday apartment in Portugal on Thursday.

Her mother Kate McCann, from Leicestershire, said: "Please let us know where to find Madeleine or put her in a place of safety."

Portuguese police have widened their search to nine miles (15km) from the Algarve village of Praia da Luz.

Mrs McCann, who had asked to speak to the media, said: "We would like to say a few words to the person who is with our Madeleine, or has been with Madeleine.

"Madeleine is a beautiful, bright, funny and caring little girl. She is so special. Please, please, do not hurt her.

Speaking with husband Gerry at her side, she added: "We beg you to let Madeleine come home. We need our Madeleine."

Her final sentence was in Portuguese - "Por favor, devolva a nossa menina" - which means "Please give our little girl back".

Pyjamas

About 50 volunteers have been helping to search the area for signs of the girl, including the clothes she was wearing when she vanished.

Her family confirmed she was wearing white pyjama bottoms with a small floral design and a short-sleeved pink top with a picture of Winnie the Pooh character Eeyore.

The pyjamas, bought in Marks and Spencer last year, had the Eeyore written in capital letters.

Police have a sketch of a suspect but will not elaborate on their evidence "to safeguard the child's life".

Portuguese police say they believe Madeleine is alive

The toddler is believed to have been taken from her bed while her parents were eating at a nearby restaurant and regularly checking on her and their two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie.

BBC correspondent Robert Hall said he had been out with a volunteer search team - made up mainly of British expats and tourists - on Monday.

Although they said they had not been well briefed by police, they did know one item they were looking out for was Madeleine's clothing, our correspondent said.

Dave Felton, an expat from Manchester who lives in the village, said: "People are still hoping that we don't actually find her and that she is safe and sound somewhere."

Around the marina in the nearby town of Lagos, maritime police have been searching amid claims that a man was seen with a small girl in the area.

In Portugal we say 'hope is the last thing to lose'

Mayor Julio Barroso

Police under spotlight

Marina worker Joao Riveiro said a number of officers had been searching and making inquiries.

"Police without uniforms moved around a lot about two days ago. They moved around and were asking questions."

Officers have taken records of all boats booked into the marina between 27 April and 6 May.

Along the nearby coast police have checked a cave complex at Ponta da Piedade, with the help of volunteer canoeists.

'Vague sketch'

Police, who have received thousands of calls, have not reported any progress in their investigation since saying on Saturday they thought Madeleine had been abducted but was alive.

They are coming under increasing pressure to give more information, but correspondent Robert Hall said it was not the style of the Portuguese police to provide constant updates to the media and public.

Local mayor Julio Barroso told BBC News 24 work was going on behind the scenes to try to find Madeleine.

"Our judicial police are following all the signs, and they are working very hard for all these days and they have many many people involved," he said.

He said about 130 people were working on the case, including 80 detectives, some of whom had come from the capital Lisbon. The team also involved local and maritime police, firefighters, volunteers and members of the Red Cross, he said.

When asked how he felt about what had happened he said: "In Portugal we say 'hope is the last thing to lose'."

At the weekend, officers were stopping cars on roads and searching abandoned homes and scrubland in the surrounding Algarve countryside.

Airports across the country are on alert and police believe the toddler is still in Portugal.

They have been showing locals what one called "a vague sketch" of a suspect.

It is believed the image shows only the rear view of a man.

Mrs McCann found the outside shutter and window to Madeleine's room had been opened and her daughter missing shortly before 2200 local time on Thursday.

Mark Warner managing director David Hopkins said in having a meal nearby in what was a "very safe environment", the McCanns had "done nothing that I'm sure many parents wouldn't have done".

A spokesman for the company said two holiday bookings at the resort had been cancelled and six had asked to go to another site.

How long does anyone think it'll be before the talking-to-the-dead merchants (Acorah and the rest of his vile, sickening ilk) come out and tell us what they think happened after communication with the "spirit world"?

Hopefully it'll be like the Sylvia Browne and Shawn Hornbeck case... But I sincerely hope it won't take as long.

It's worth a try, psychic energy is not everyone's cuppa but past cases have shown that they have been a help. I read the book of the Soham murders that Hollys Dad wrote, pyschic's were, in that instance a real strength to the family, with a certain amount of knowledge they felt no-one else could have known.

i read that book too, and what a shame the cops didn't accept the info from the psychic sooner, they said it couldn't be used as evidence in court. I remember it said that someone 'a watchman' is watching the children from close by, and huntly was the caretaker, close enough for me, is he dead yet? maybe he needs a hand.

If I were a cop, and someone came up to me and told me all about a murder that had happened in lots of accurate detail, where the body could be found etc., and were then found to be right, the first thing *I'd* do is nick them on suspicion of murder.

Biggin, do you happen to know how many things this psychic said that were *wrong*? Not just slightly saying-watchman-instead-of-caretaker-wrong, but completely and utterly doesn't-fit-unless-you-really-really-try wrong?

This latest story, weak as it is http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,91210-1268830,00.html

made more personal today for me, on my Son' 4th b'day, I bought him a copy of the book 'Going on a bear hunt' as a birthday present, held in church by Maddies Mum today. If you're going abroad this year it would be a thought to pack a few downloads of the pictures and information in your suitcase and distribute them in and around the resort.

Ooh, the 404 error did it?

Seriously though, the discussions on this on another forum I frequent are up to about 5000 posts now. Lots of wild speculation, but general consensus has always been that the parents were involved somehow. Well, apart from a few who refuse to believe it. Regardless of if they were involved in her disappearance, how they could happily leave 3 kids alone while they went out on the lash?

For me this is definitely one to remain firmly agnostic on. Way too much speculation going on, and I can't see it doing anyone any good. The Portuguese system is so different to our own, and it doesn't feed the media as efficiently, which probably works in Portugal, but not when the British Press is crawling all over it. The Portuguese Police haven't helped themselves by leaking rumours faster than a bullet riddled collander. A very distasteful media blood fest.

I can form no opinion at the moment, as the reported evidence is so conflicting, but I feel a public and media surge in sympathy, away from the parents.

On your last point tek-monkey whether you believe it or not, the parents would claim that they were not on "the lash" but enjoying a meal, at a restaurant on the same complex, within sight of the appartment.

I refuse to get pulled in by it all, its run by the media, how much of it is the truth we don't know. I would like to think that the parents had nothing to do with the abduction and can only pray that she is found, alive. Heres hoping.

I agree with you gone2seed on this one.

I thought it was proved that they could not see the apartment from where they were eating? And even so, anything could have happened. Sorry, but they were offered babysitting services and turned them down. They only picked the kids up from the creche at 6, then put them in bed 90 mins later so they could go out again.

Regardless of what they had to do with her going missing, I can't help questioning their parenting skills. Does anyone here honestly think its OK to leave 3 kids, all under 4, on they're own? Not having kids its a bit harder for me to understand the reasoning behind it, but none of my mates leave the house without their nippers.

EDIT: Oh yeah, very much doubt she's alive. If she was abducted, the person that did it will know they'll be killed as soon as they hit prison. They can't risk that, they'll have killed her and buried the body by now. Its VERY rare kids are abducted and kept for this long, and still found alive unfortunately :(

I don't trust the source, but I doubt even the daily mail would photoshop the pic of the resort. Anyway, here's their photos:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/li...ews.html?in_article_id=474428&in_page_id=1811

And just as another reference, here's the BBC one:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6667307.stm

Bear in mind there are 2 entrances to the apartment. Even if they could see the stairs to the back (which I don't think they could), they could not see the front door. They would also not stand a chance of hearing anything. Regardless of anything the media says, these photos prove how far away they were and no matter what anyone says or thinks can change that. There is a lot of hearsay, but very little actual facts.

EDIT: One thing that did make me think, but I couldn't find a link so didn't post it. Taken from this article under the checks on the children section.

A woman in a nearby apartment said that she had heard Madeleine crying for her parents for long periods, but she was unable to say on which nights.

Interesting read. The alcohol bit is interesting, seems they averaged about a bottle and a half of wine that day (14 bottles between 9 of them). If they insist they didn't drink much at the meal, they must have been ratted in the afternoon.
