Thanks.

It sounds like I need to find a tent I like and then go back and check the prices on t'internet (incl eBay). I must admit I'm more inclined to buy from someone who's got tents set up for inspection if only to encourage them to carry on setting them up.
I completely agree however 160 quid saved is a fair amount

Btw we went to go outdoors in Wolverhampton and were disappointed with the tents they had out outside.... And decathlon in Wednesbury only had one tent up (and not very well)... Towsure had the best range on display
Thanks for that. I'm down at Edgbaston the next two Saturday afternoons so a detour to Halesowen would fit in nicely.

Yeoman's at Trentham Gardens usually have tents displayed outside during the summer months too.
They had some up there at the weekend just gone - didn't get a close look but there appeared to be a couple of big ones (steady now) out already.

The Wildlife Trust @ Wolseley Bridge usually have a tent display event sometime in late Spring/early Summer.

It is done; I've gone and bought a Vango Brecon 400 for £118.

I went to Towsure in Halesowen and had a good look round. It was very good. I didn't see anything suitable but at least came away with a better idea of what I wanted. (There was one that might have sufficed but was a bit bigger and hence cost more than I wanted to pay.)

Then this afternoon I went to Yeomans at the Codsall and Wergs Garden Centre (WV8 2HJ) which had a good range of tents set up, and came away something that'll last me a good few years. Roll on some good weather when I can give it a try-out in the back garden.

Good stuff... We went to Codsall 3 weeks ago and they hardly had any setup....

SOL may have drawn their horns in a bit in recent years, smaller shop and all that - maybe it still goes on, though - locals such as @Rikki more info.
Last time I went in Outdoor leisure in Mill St. I only got as far as standing in the doorway. Bloke seemed gobsmacked a female would actually go in to give them custom. My first and last visit!

What a difference in Millets.Assistant was very helpful and.I was so happy when he said they were staying in Stafford .

Millets people have always been good - I've never seen anybody working in there that wasn't just right.

I'm not really a fan of the Trespass shop, though.

SOL was a great shop in the 80s/early 90s - this side of 2000, it hasn't been on my regular 'circuit' at all, unless I've had a special requirement - I've actually only been in the new small shop once since they moved from the big shop, further up Mill Street, where Furniture Exchange is now.

Having not ventured up Mill Street for years, I was actually on my way to the 'old' shop as I remembered it years ago when I came across the new one. Seemed to have disturbed him putting his new stock away, which was obviously more important than my custom. Someone p1sses me off once, they don't get another chance!
I used to love the old 'Army and Navy Stores' by the Grapes.(Where Express Curtains is now??) They had an upstairs tent section years ago with loads on display, and the second hand tent my parents bought is still in my loft now, after travelling 1000's of miles through Uk and Europe.

An interrogation session today revealed that the plan was to move in three weeks time from now, but there may be "paperwork issues" that could delay that.

Yes Bedsons, but they did sell army and navy surplus
stuff, in fact I bought my first pair of work boots from there
a highly polished and slightly cracked ex army pair, they
lasted me years, I even had a lunch bag made from canvas from them.

There used to be an Army and Navy shop around the corner on the Newport Road, too. It may have been where The Floodgate is now?

Agreed, was in today actually. The nikwax products are mostly 50% off rather than 30%, got some leather reviver for my Merrels.
