There was one in Leek, apparently. I heard rumours of one at the Bodmin Avenue shops, but whether it ever actually appeared or not, I don't know.

There's a private house on Kensington Drive which has one which activates when you walk down the drive. It's bloody irritating, but then I suppose it's meant to be...

If people are deliberately producing noise which is intended to be irritating to others then I would expect Environmental Health Officers to take rapid action to put an end to this public nuisance.

First came to my attention when put in Peterborogh shopping centre. As I understood, the noise was only audible to teenagers of the type that like to hang around near shops being antisocial. Many of us are a long way from being teenagers, so should be deaf to it. Of couse the question is, does it violate the human rights of the gangs of teenagers? Probably, but no more than they violate others' rights by hurling abuse, being threatening, and writing graffiti. It doesn't hurt, its just annoying.

The thing is it's not only teenagers who can hear them. Everyone loses the ability to hear higher pitches gradually and at different rates. If you google the subject you should be able to find a frequency testing thingy ( technical term ) and test out your hearing. Both me and the gf could both hear this supposedly inaudible sound, were both 25.

Is that a Moomin?
Am nrly 30 and can still hear it and my mum is 50 and can hear them, maybe we have xmen like super hearing?

I notice that, whilst you deny being a teenager ( something with which you are unlikely to be charged ) you have avoided denying being 'anti-social'. Are we to read someting into this omission?

No I think it's audible to well behaved young people who are helping their gran to the shops as well - that's the point it's discriminates only on age. So anyone over 25 can be antisocial with impunity and however good the kids are they still get punished.

The reason I started this thread is because I was delivering leaflets for one of the county council election candidates down Porlock Avenue and I heard this really high-pitched, annoying sound that caused me some distress and made it very difficult for me to be in the area several metres around it.

I had suffered the same thing before from that house (except I was walking up the other side of the road going to someone's house with them) but this time I noted the number. Everyone around me on these occasions was 30+ and couldn't hear it, but I could. From hearing various sound frequencies via the internet, I discovered that I could hear anything up to about 18kHz and I estimate that sound to have been around 16kHz.

I will be reporting it to environmental health, but I have only been up there at the weekend so I want to check that it is on during school term time in case they check it out and it's been turned off (it's not far from Leasowes Primary School and I'm giving the benefit of the doubt somewhat to the people who live there).

I would be interested to know the number as, although I may rather too elderly to hear it myself, I do have a bat detector and will see if I can set it off and detect it. I wonder if it has a detrimental effect on bats? That would be an offence in itself, if it could be proven.

Hard to hear from Porlock to be honest, and thats from a teenager. Its above the co-op store at Bodmin, you can see it, its not normally on, but sometimes during the day it is and at the weirdest of times.

Some days around 12-2 the things on, and it doesn't make sense because there aren't groups hanging around, just people buying there dinner and leaving. It is an irritating noise, but from the other end of those shops it can barely be heard (by anyone I know) so I'm suprised you can hear it from Porlock.

Found it funny once two builders were at the cash point, there was about 4 of us cringing at the high pitched noise, and this builder was giving us the weirdest look ever, any way he turned around and his mate (who must have been mid 30s atleast) was cringing too, which is when he told him that it was one of the dispersing alarms.

I'm sure they wouldn't be that effective, because you can put up with it after a few minutes of standing there as you get used to it. Note; don't associate me with any groups of kids hanging around, I mean from the point of view of waiting for my mates to walk out of the co-op or bakery!

Yes true, don't be prejudice on the topic, it's a stereotypical opinion because people see groups walking around, but have you ever thought how to monitor those not being idiots, well you can't because they aren't hanging around in groups.
