Moving to Stafford

Hi,

I've been offered a job at a new warehouse at J14, starting on 4th June. I don't know Stafford at all and I'm looking for accomodation. Probably a shared house to begin with, so I can get to know the area before I rent my own place.

As I don't drive, I'm looking to live somewhere very close to the Junction. I've found rooms available in co-operative st, does not look too far on the map. Can anyone please tell me what the area is like, pubs to recommend/avoid etc. Looks like I can walk from co-operative st to the J16 is that correct?

Does anyone have any B&B's they can recommend just in case I can't secure shared accomodation.

Any other tips and hints, gratefully received.

Colin

Welcome James, and welcome to Stafford.

You have definitely coming to the best end of Stafford!
It's a fair walk from Co-Op St to be quite honest. I'd say a mile+. Get yourself a cheapo 2nd hand bike, slight uphill on the way to work, but you'll freewheel all the way home!

I'll leave reccomendations for pubs to others, as a father of three with two jobs I don't get out much! I would however, avoid the Antelope and Crispin unless you are up for a ruck!

Hope you are a footy fan because you are right next to Stafford Rangers ground, and a visit there is essential, just don't expect Samba football!

Welcome to the Forum.
Co-operative Street is a nice enough area - just the right side of 'the tracks' not to be North End - with a couple of decent pubs nearby. The Joiners Arms on Marston Road has two decent draft ales and is friendly, The Tap and Spile at the bottom of Peel Terrace is larger with even more real ale. I would avoid the Antelope unless you can do a fine impression of a local. The Albion on Peel Terrace also puts on some live music occassionally.

I would recomend getting a bike rather than walking though. You could try Back-2-Bikes (which is within walking distance) for a cheap reconditioned cycle - www.back2bikes.org.uk.

As a dyed in the wool North Ender (currently resident in South Ford) I could find that offensive! :D

Yeah, Doc, especially since you live about ten houses south of "the tracks"! Cheeky booger!

Preciclly - it's SOUTH of the tracks! Same it's not a moat or something.

I'm not saying everyone from the North End is 15 and pushing a pram with their second baby in it while shouting obsenities at the suspected father or hanging out with a bottle of alcho pop being shouted at by a chav mum but there is large proportion and I would prefer it if they didn't get out too much.

my brother lives on co-operative street and he likes it so much hes even lived in 2 houses there, albeit at opposite ends of the road.

he pretty much cycles everywhere, but there is a number 8 bus service that will get you into town if you cant be arsed to walk/cycle.

im not sure if the bus service goes up as far as the j14, i know it does holmcroft and parkside from i lived at north end (proper...i lived at the eagles lair for a year), mind you, if youre working shifts the buses might not even run at the right times for you.

if you need to get signed up with a local gp, theres the holmcroft surgery which will be on your way to or from work so nice and convenient.

best of luck with you move and i hope youll be very happy.

ps. make sure you try out the northenr lights chippy....i used to work there and be warned, the co-op on stone road smells of wee just as you walk in.

Northern Lights chippy is excellent!
i used hate working there, but the silver lining was that when we shut down, everything that was still in the hot cabinets was the staffs to take home else it went in the bin.

i was introduced to the joys of battered roe there and would regularly hide it under the pinapple rings (that no one in their right mind would order) so i was guaranteed a bit to take home! :ninja:

at least it wasnt a big walk home and i was never late for work- the but the flat always stunk of chips- even though i never cooked them.

ive been known to hold up the queue in the dev chippy in town on saturday nights drunkenly discussing the merits of said fodder and insisting it be cooked fresh for me.

Bus stop at the corner of Crab Lane/Stone Road, opposite the house on the corner with the large silver birch tree and the pond, (birthplace of myself.) 200 yard walk from this stop to Primepoint 14.

Oh! by the way when I visit my mum, who still lives there, I notice a distinct lack of Chavs or Pikey's. Yes, the three or four streets around Moorfields and Pitt St aren't too clever, but lets not carried away with the idea that the entire North End of Stafford is just a replica of Cannock or Smoke-on-Stench. Mind you when I did my paper round on Eccleshall Road/Creswell Manor Farm I did have to deliver THE SUN to one family!... I reported them to the police!

Hi catattack666.

I'm not sure if you get this whole forum business so I thought I'd offer some help (and that goes for anyone new around here who's at all unsure)!

This is a thread in response to the question jamesb posted about moving to Stafford. It can be read by everyone (like all the threads on this forum), and isn't directed at anyone in particular. So asking everyone to "leave you alone" doesn't really make sense, as no-one had actually addressed you! :P

If you click around The Forum and read a few threads, I'm sure you'll get a feel for it. It's very different to MySpace and places like that, because it's all about everyone chatting together, rather than focussing on one particular person/profile.

Hope you enjoy joining in the fun, but without taking people's threads off course ;)
