Sorted out painting the greenhouse today, it now has a coat of teak oil, inside and out. It smells great, might have to move in for a while.

Apartments planned for former Staffordshire County Council offices

DEVELOPMENT... 16 Martin Street.

HISTORIC former council offices in Stafford which are standing empty could be turned into apartments.

A developer has lodged plans to create 17 properties within the grade II listed building at 16 Martin Street, which sits opposite Staffordshire County Council's County Buildings.

The apartments, proposed by Better View Homes, would include two two-bedroom homes, 11 one-bed flats and four studios.

For years the building was used by Staffordshire County Council until its new modern complex, Staffordshire Place, opened in nearby Tipping Street almost five years ago.

The site, which dates back to 1926 and was given listed status in February 1994, was up for sale for £545,000.

It is close to the high street in a pedestrian area, fronting both Martin Street and St Chad's Place.

The developer says the four-storey building will remain unchanged externally.

John Freeman, from JAF Design, said in the application on behalf of the developer: "The group of buildings create a significant historical presence on Martin Street and since the area is now pedestrianised can be enjoyed by many along with the many heritage assets in the near vicinity of the town centre.

Meanwhile, retailers could soon move in to empty shop units at Staffordshire Place. Staffordshire County Council has revealed there are two proposals on the table for the three empty ground floor units at the site.

The development originally included five units, which were set to generate income for the authority, but the council moved its library into two of the units last year, leaving three available.
