I think next door left their rear car window open a little. There is a suspicious looking gap in the snow. I'll find out in a bit when they do the school run.
BTW Who dropped a house on me? Can who ever it was please come finish me off? It would be a mercy.

p jr gutted because school is open today. It's Mrs p taking him in today, so as the client I was due to meet has called to postpone due to the weather I have broken the habits of a lifetime and decided to have a lie in. Later, a lengthy walk on the Chase followed by a spot of lunch at the Seven Stars beckons.

Well, the heating fix didn't last long. Working overnight and now stopped again since 6.30am. Hubby tried doing it again before going to work, but no joy.

I've just nearly broke my neck trying to climb the slippery metal step ladders , with a hairdryer waving dangerously around above my head. Couldn't climb up far enough to pour the kettle of water over the pipe (one of the disadvantages of only being 5ft 2 !)

Apparently the initial central heating installers (Eaton & Ward) put a pipe which wasn't the correct width , under the floorboards and to outside . A plumber working on the house next door made me aware of it when he saw it years ago, and warned that we'd have trouble in icy conditions with it being too thin. But I just thought he was being an intefering git at the time....

Been playing 'mummy' to the blackbirds in my garden. They were sitting on the frozen bird bath, looking at me through the patio windows . Managed to hammer out about an inch of solid ice out the bird bath to give them some water , and they've been fighting for space to get to it. All the bird seeds have been covered with snow, so thought hubby wouldn't mind the 'nice' bread he'd earmarked for tomorrows lunch box going to a good cause :D

Got excited because the central heating suddenly fired up and the error code went off. Radiators started heating up.....that happiness lasted just 5 minutes. Now gone off again and back to an error code :(

Now thawing canine p out after a rather chill couple of hours on the Chase. When I've recovered the feeling in my fingers I shall head out to the Sept Etoiles.

Another one if those days where you can't believe how hard life is...

I have my oil boiler turned up to 11. It is just about maintaining a constant temp in the house. I will attempt a run to Sainsbury's this afternoon and get enough supplies to last over the weekend. The lane here has been gritted and currently down to the tarmac.

Are they predicting snow over the weekend?

Have had 14 weather alerts from Met Office in the past 24 hours and each one of them has either proved woefully inaccurate or contradicted within minutes by another alert...

Hextall Lane has a special automatic gritting system - it's working very well.

The stuff they flung down on the wet tar in the summer is coming off steadily, at just the right rate.

I've had ones 'predicting' things in the past that still haven't happened.

How much money do they spend on equipment at the MO?

They'd be better off standing outside with a pinecone in one hand and a raised wet finger with the other hand.

pipe under the floorboards to outside will be 21mm overflow which is fine internally. It actually is probably the only option as a bigger pipe would mean cutting too much out of floor joists in places.

Outside it should be increased to 32mm. Current recommendation is to now run it all internally if possible. But a lot of times it's not practical

I've seen plenty installed correctly still freeze

Thought the lamp-post down the alleyway had blown in half with the wind when I saw it swinging down to the ground behind the neghbours wall . It was the Eon blokes changing the light bulbs by unscrewing the bottom part of the post and swinging it down to work at ground level

Just about to ring hubby to say the heating was back on.....went back off again before he answered the phone .

Got my gas fire in the lounge but the house is open plan, so the heat from the fire just disappears . Not helping having a crap fitted kitchen (another big mistake using M&H kitchens many years ago!) with massive gaps behind the cupboards letting a gale force wind in. Did some self blocking-up of loads of gaps myself using sponge scourers stuffed behind some, and several old bath towels in the cupboards under the sink ...that's how big the gaps are!

Just rang my gas/plumber bloke again as it's fired up twice this morning, worked for 5 minutes and then conked out again with the error code back on. Thought something else might be going on with it, but he says it's just where it's thawed out a bit and left some space for more water to go in and then re-frozen.
He says he's had several this morning, even ones where the pipe goes into an internal drain.

Snow for tonight and then again on Friday afternoon into Saturday morning, it is dependant on storm Emma, and its actual path, so how much we get and when is still not exactly timed.

Christ, you aren't having much luck with that are you?

If you can leave the house, maybe pop down B&Q and grab some insulating foam to wrap the pipe in? Or if you're feeling brave, just do what our engineer did and slice the pipe at the boiler and drain into a bucket.

It's already got insulating foam around it , and now a piece of bubblewrap over the end , fastened on with an elastic band

Us and pipe slicing :lorks: sounds even more dangerous as us with a mixture of snow, metal ladders,a hairdryer and kettle of hot water in the dark and swirling snow at 10pm (and the assistant having started on the cider....)

Found the little old electric plug-in radiator out of hibernation, not much good but might help a bit. I know what hubbys going to say later.."Where's the new fan heater we bought , we'll put that on as well" Oops, That's 60 miles away in sons house. I lent it to him when they were having heating problems in their house and forgot to get it back

Sitting watching the birds tucking into the speciality olive and 'something' bread that I found in the freezer. Had a nibble of myself and remember why it went in the freezer and stayed there now. At least the blackbirds are woofing it down .

It's my bin collection day tomorrow, I have put it out ready, but I am expecting the collection team to have more sense and stay in bed.
